Article: EFF calling white people boers

But why is "boer" derogatory.

I don't mind being called one, even if I'm not a farmer.

The only offense that is connected to that word exists only in the some people's minds.

Agree,

Im not a boer. Why call all white people boers? Thats racist.

and agree.

Personally I do not mind, but I'm against generalising with ethnic groups (or in general demographics).

Yeah, sort of. But then it is only words and name calling that stirs emotions in people and polarises society. You might not take offence if I call you a faggot but the connotation is there and many will take offence to that, even if not in your own mind.

35% of white South Africans are English, not Afrikaans. Its a huge generalization. We have our own history and our own culture as well.

That's great that you value your origin and history, but you are already branded as imperialist bloody agents by the EFF leader.

It is intended as an insult - that is why it is insulting.

The word "boer" may or may not be insulting to your ears, but the intention of Mr. Wele was clearly to insult all whites.

It's the opposite of the k word. Used in the same way, same intention, same history, same innocuous word hijacked for hatred

Boer = farmer.

You really have to be the king of an entire planet of your own called Retard if you think all white people are farmers.

Er no. Historians equate Afrikaaners with Boers too.

The end of the Anglo-Boer War in May 1902 left a people who were defeated, disgruntled, and bitter in a land that was denuded of fields and devoid of stock. Unable or unwilling to start anew, Afrikaners (also known as Boers) emigrated from South Africa.

Define "boers" ...

It's not about being derogatory or not, but about him having a problem with a group of people purely on basis of their ethnicity or race. He could have said, "those whites who hold shares in Anglo" or even better "those who hold shares in Anglo" but instead he explicitly pointed to peoples' ethnicity per se. It's as if the problem is because of that and not that there may be innocent "Boers" who are OK too. He's branding people for the wrong reason.

You just knew that the comments in this thread were going to be as entertaining as the speech. :)

Correct...

Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act

Prohibition of unfair discrimination on ground of race

7. Subject to section 6, no person may unfairly discriminate against any person on the ground of race, including--

(a) the dissemination of any propaganda or idea, which propounds the racial superiority or inferiority of any person, including incitement to, or participation in, any form of racial violence;

(b) the engagement in any activity which is intended to promote, or has the effect of promoting, exclusivity, based on race;

(c) the exclusion of persons of a particular race group under any rule or practice that appears to be legitimate but which is actually aimed at maintaining exclusive control by a particular race group;

(d) the provision or continued provision of inferior services to any racial group, compared to those of another racial group;

(e) the denial of access to opportunities, including access to services or contractual opportunities for rendering services for consideration, or failing to take steps to reasonably accommodate the needs of such persons.

Strictly speaking, Ghoti had a good point when stating his ethnics tied to language. The Trekboere, Grensboere and Voortrekkers did not want to be associated with their Dutch counterparts, they called themselves Boers. Historically they established their own sub-group <- this is where Boer is synonymous with Afrikaner.

Please learn to spell Afrikaner.

Black people could shrug off use of the k word too but, the fact is the word is meant to degrade and offend.
The point is the dude intended to defame, belittle and offend white people with the word so even though the term leaves me cold I'm glad he was censured for his intent to belittle and offend.

I don't find it racist or derogatory in any way :confused:

Agreed.

Own it if you like. But it has loads of negative connotations and I don't think whites deserve to be blanket associated with the negative kark of the few that live up to tbe sterotype.

Good on parliment for recognising this and standing up for the white minority,
