Its not actually petty...

Its about the way the word was used, and the intent of its use. It was intended as a racist insult and needs to be dealt with as such.
 
I don't care what they call me, because I don't have a self-enforced inferiority complex like some groups.

You are NOT English. Please do not insult yourself. You are, like me, an English-speaking "Sefrican". I am of British descent, but, after living in the UK for 5 years, I realised I would rather not be "English" or British (don't like the ****ers at all)

Seriously, unless this country starts growing up it's not going to move forward. If you feel insulted by being called a "Boer", a "Soutie" or even a "whitey" or "Mlunugu"... I feel sorry for you. I have other more important thinks to keep me busy. Being called anything not even remotely racist doesn't bother me at all.

Just me, maybe the country will move past these petty issues one day and worry more about the state of the economy.

You seem to be missing the point..

Its not about you or me being insulted or anything of that nature.

I personally have no issue being called a boer (even though I'm not one), or a rooinek, or a soutpiel, but if someone uses words like that in a public forum and means it in a racist way, then it needs to be dealt with.

Do you include the K word there ? Because technically it is not offensive, it just means unbeliever.

It is all in the use of the word, and the way in which Malema uses "Boer" it is just as offensive as "K.....".

I have never and still don't see it as a racist insult. That is my point. They can shout Kill the boer till they red in the face. It's insighting violence yes, racist ... not so much.

You don't think it is would be horribly insulting and possibly racist to refer to black people as impis or sangomas?

Having said that the guy was specifically talking about expropriating land for agricultural use. The use of the word "boer" seems somewhat appropriate and doesn't appear to refer to all white people. Still he should have used the word "farmer" instead as the use of the word boer makes it immediately about race.

Yes...the word may or may not be inoccuous, but he clearly used it in a differentiating and insulting way.

No, it's not the same. K was used as a derogitory word from the word go. It was never meant as none believer and the spelling is different. That "idea" of what it meant was people trying to hide their racist insults.

Boer on the other hand is nothing near derogitory.

The word itself isn't derogatory in isolation, but if used in a specific way, yes, it can be deemed as racist, I think. In this context the word was used to refer to people of a certain race, in a negative way, specifically by a person who is well-known for his hatred of white people.

It started off as non-believer, and has morphed into what it is.

Being in the ECape it would be interesting to see the demographic breakdown of farmers in the area.

:rolleyes: I was speaking about languages in that context, not nationality. Please read more carefully.
