dtu is made up of 2 components, the previously known as natal technikon and ml sultan technikon.
back in the day ml sultan was a non white institution and natal technikon was white
ml sultan technikon has a long history of political activity and protests - usually violent and destructive - at one point in the 90s, the rector and a few others were hold hostage by the src.
ml sultan's student body was mainly "asian" and black with virtually zero white students.
the white student component was mainly to be found at the hotel school, a physically separate facility positioned midway between the campus of ml sultan & natal technikon.
because the hotel school comprised mainly white students and was separately located, it was referred to as a "volkstaad" by the src.
on the main ml sultan campus, if there were 10 white students, that would be a lot (as a direct result of nationalist legislation at the time), although natal technikon had a significant non white student component.
a particular irony in this whole debacle, is that the jewish community were huge funders of ml sultan despite the lack of a single jewish student attending ml sultan.
in a previous post i mentioned the biggest lecture theatre on the ml sultan campus, where all student body meetings are held, was donated /funded in it's entirety by arnold zulman, out of his personal money - not as the usual tax-deductable type of charitable corporate donation. his company, beacon sweets & chocolates also made big contributions as well funding huge amounts of bursaries - even for students whose studies had no "food" component. he was also the institution's go-to person if a student hit some crisis that involved money. i recall one particular incident where an engineering student was going to have to "quit" to look after a sibling with some potentially terminal medical condition. zulman again stepped in, paying for that sibling's surgery & treatment at the only private facility in the country equipped / qualified to deal with the condition - at considerable personal expense.
This type of funding also extended to natal technikon, the other half of what is now known as the durban university of technology.
one of his great concerns when selling beacon sweets & chocolates to tiger brands, was the continual and ongoing support given to these two institutions.
so i find it rather ironic, given the jewish community's support, the src has embarked on this "rent a cause" type of action.
