Farm attacks are not racially motivated, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said on Monday.

"People went to farms to steal, motivated by greed," researcher Johan Burger told reporters in Johannesburg.
 
And the torture that sometimes goes with the attacks? What is that motivation?

The ISS is talking ****! Probably forced to do this by government.

I'm sorry ISS, but greed can include supremacism - you know, killing racists, the privileged with wealth and power.

I do however agree, that there are several reason to trespass territories in order to do criminal acts. As mentioned by Nod, torture is more than stealing. Racially motivated attacks are only one reason, there are many, survival being #1.

Even if an equal % of home invasions consisted of torture, it would still point to some kind of hate crime.
Torture is very personal. You don't torture someone for the hell of it, you must get something out of it.

We read about use of irons, boiling water, and in one case the Avis guy who drove me from the airport told me how he was waterboarded in a home invasion.
 
They may not necessarily be MOTIVATED by race, but they can definitely be AGGRAVATED by racial motives.
 
I do however believe some of the violence/torture is motivated by simply being able to have someone who is better (economically superior) than themselves at their mercy.

Yup, thats the biggest reason. Racially motivated crimes against farmers are a very tiny percentage of farm crime. Its mostly greed. We have had two of our friends farms hit, and they come in on payday and make off with the loot :/ But the last one was about 7 years ago.

This is true, which brings me back to greed, as greed is an aggravator, especially looking at the whole equality issue and how it is being politically resolved by the ANC and EFF.
 
I bet the report would have been different is Henry Bosshof was still running the ISS. Since his passing, the ISS has become over-run by agents allied to the ruling party. It is no longer an independent think tank.

Sometimes the farm workers and domestic workers get beaten, tortured and killed too.

According to wikipedia. 61% of farm attack victims are white (even though they own 80% of the farms (apparently)). So that would make 39% not white.
