Article: Five cent coin discontinued

Don't you mean less time?

haha nope, because they'll first try to pay in 5c coins, then the teller will tell them they've been discontinued; then they'll count their 5c again (just to make sure they got them all - save every penny!) and then proceed to pay in 10c, only to realise they don't have enough because they've been collecting 5c over the years, and eventually they'll just pay with a cash note as everyone in the store commits ritual suicide.

That's what I also thought!!!

I don't have any cash with me and only carry my cards with me. I just went to put in R300 of petrol in my car and when I wanted to pay with my garage card I was told the machine is offline. Then I went inside to use the ATM and also offline!!

I had to phone somebody to bring me the cash because I had no cash on me.

Or like that one episode on LOL where they gave the people in their car a hose pipe and told them to suck the fuel out cause they put in too much fuel. lol.

I would have told them not to make their problem mine. They should have had a sign up to say that the machine of offline to warn you.

Drop everything below R1... The .95 etc on the end of prices just serves to annoy and make the math more difficult.

When last have you seen 1 and 2c coins in circulation? They were discontinued some time ago.

Hopefully now we'll have prices rounded to the nearest rand.

Absa bank still gives 1c if your close your accounts :P

Lol, I thought that all the 1c and 2c coins would have been sent to the Reserve Bank to be melted down.

As for getting rid of 5c coins, it was going to happen eventually. I don't think it will cause many problems, after the intial "OMG this is a scam to steal my money" phase.

Almost all stores already have their tills set to round prices down to 5c, they will just round down to 10c now, easy enough.

The 1c 2c are no longer minted, but are still legal tender.

The when the 5cstops being minted it will also still be legal tender.

Spend your 1c 2c and 5c coins wilst they are legal tender

Just rember the rules:

Legal Tender

Legal tender refers to banknotes or coin that may be legally offered in payment of an obligation and that a creditor is obliged to accept.

Any amount in banknotes may be offered for payment. In the case of coin, the acceptable amount per individual transactions, is equal to the total amount, not exceeding the following:

fifty rand, where coin of the denomination of one rand or higher are so tendered;
five rand, where coin of denominations of ten cents up to and including fifty cents are so tendered;
fifty cents, where coin of the denomination of five cents or less are so tendered; and
the value of each coin so tendered shall be equal to the amount specified on that coin.

does this mean I cant buy R10 bread and pay with 5c coins only? cause the legal limit per transaction is R5?

at last, I'm tired of collecting that shrapnel, these days whenever a teller wants to give me 5c change I just tell them to keep it

I have about R20's worth of 5c coins at home :(
I have about R10's worth of 5 cent coins, I just wonder where and how I can get rid of them? Maybe I'll give a homeless man my bag that's full of those 5 cent coins or get a R10 note from the Reserve Bank.

It's actually embarrasing that in this day and age we still make use of 5 cent and 10 cent coins. Taxi drivers phased out the use of 5 cent coins almost 10 years ago (taxi drivers do not accept payment money containing 5 cent coins).

Unless you pay by card then it's the exact amount.
Pick n Pay have been knocking it off on cards too for quite sometime. I know quite a few places don't yet though.

I wouldn't even bother. It's their problem that their payment system is non-functional. I'd expect either prominent signs or their employees informing each customer before any purchase. If someone has to bring me cash, then the garage can pay for their travel at AA rates plus a charge for the time (both mine and the person bringing the cash).

I have got a box full of 5c coins, can I take it to a bank?

Want to know this as well. I have a CD spindle full of them. If 5c's aren't going to be accepted anymore, I'll quickly go and cash mine in at a store for a coke or something.
