Article: Five cent coin discontinued

Want to know this as well. I have a CD spindle full of them. If 5c's aren't going to be accepted anymore, I'll quickly go and cash mine in at a store for a coke or something.

Manufacture of 1c coins was stopped 10 years ago but they are still legal tender. 5c coins are still in production and are legal tender.

Refer to the Reserve Bank quote in post 31 .

at last, I'm tired of collecting that shrapnel, these days whenever a teller wants to give me 5c change I just tell them to keep it
I usually just drop the 5c coins in one of those tins at the checkout - usually SPCA or other animal rescue organisation. I've got a big jar of miscellaneous coins at home so I think I'll just have the kids sort out the 5c ones and give those to the aforementioned orgs in bulk.
Pick n Pay have been knocking it off on cards too for quite sometime. I know quite a few places don't yet though.
Thanks - good to know.

I wouldn't even bother. It's their problem that their payment system is non-functional. I'd expect either prominent signs or their employees informing each customer before any purchase. If someone has to bring me cash, then the garage can pay for their travel at AA rates plus a charge for the time (both mine and the person bringing the cash).

After I tried the ATM I looked around the shop and garage just to make sure there weren't any signs up. They had no signs anywhere. They then wanted me to give my cc number and telephone number then I could go. I told them there is no way I am giving them my cc number and that's when I phoned somebody to bring me the cash. I will never be using that Shell garage again though.

That's what I also thought!!!

I don't have any cash with me and only carry my cards with me. I just went to put in R300 of petrol in my car and when I wanted to pay with my garage card I was told the machine is offline. Then I went inside to use the ATM and also offline!!

I had to phone somebody to bring me the cash because I had no cash on me.

I always make sure I have R300 minimum with me to avoid situations like the one you've been through.

That's still too much to lose when you get mugged or pick-pocketed.

Mine is 50 bucks which I keep lying loose in my pocket - not in my wallet :)

If you have a significant amount of 5 cent coins, surely they have some Copper value?
Can you not just sell them for the copper?

You can take the 5c coins to the bank and exchange them for notes. I had a bucket full of change that I took to the bank a couple of years ago. All R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c. Added up to about R1500. Was quick and easy to swap out for notes. Probably got another R1k of change lying around again. Whenever my wallet gets full of change I just dump it all into a bucket.

That's whatwe do. Take all the old coins and exchange them for "big money". I think I might keep them now and get 10c for every 5c in the future.

it's about time. these are nothing but a pain in the rear end. but in saying that i make sure that the cashier in checkers gives me my 5 cent coin change LOL. not going to let these buggas score from my hard earned back breaking money. and if they have to give me 10 cents because they don't have a 5 cents coin, then hand it over i don't care.:D
