Article: Gareth Cliff arrest welcomed

Ah FFS! Just apply the law consistently for everyone. I don't see the value in "making an example" out of someone who is a public figure when the laws are not applied in the same way to everyday citizens who break the law at will.

Fksakes man! If the cops stopped hiding in the bushes taking pictures so they could send people love letters and actually got out there and did what they are paid to do, we wouldn't have the problems that we do on our roads.

People have been caught going faster than that and not been arrested. If it's going to be an arrestable offence then always do it that way. I can't believe people are advocating different application of laws because they personally think someone is a tool

^^ this ...
and I remember not too long ago another Radio DJ(forget his name, but I thing he worked for metro FM or something) ... and he was at least this speed and got off with like R2k .... so yeah ... the point of the law is to be applied consistently, regardless of your standing in the community

What is the fine for that sort of speed? Has anyone got a link.

From 160 on there isn't a specific fine. It's a court appearance with a fine handed down by the judge. Fresh's 162 (two years ago iirc) was around R5k, although that's rather lax for today.

The fastest I've ever done is a 140 in a 120 zone and it was only for a couple of seconds.

yes but what car? please don't say bantam or something because I also wouldnt go faster than 120 in those things either. 140kph in a modern mid sized saloon feels like 80kph in a cheapy.

I call byllshyte on this whole event.

This was staged. How would a TV crew be there just by accident to catch Cliffy in the act and even film him being arrested?

This shyte was staged. And it digusts me that they did this on the road with other people traveling on the road as well.

There was a TV crew there?:wtf:
Is the film on youtube? Where did you see it?

If he was A) Drunk B) Weaving through traffic like a madman or C) Doing it in city limits where kiddies/stupid farking people/animals and whatnot are bound to walk/run/bounce into the road then I'd say yes throw the book at him because I have a dislike for the guy but he was driving a quality car on a highway at night. Did he hurt anyone? Did he come even close to doing so?

Let him pay his fine and get on with his life.

Good that he was caught. Good that he wasn't caught paying a bribe. Good that he will be fined heavily.
Making an example of him. Stupid example. Good example. Mec's driver who paralyzed that student.
