Article: IEB matric result pass rate increase

The Independent Examinations Board's (IEB) matric result pass rate for 2013 increased to 98.6 percent this year from last year's 98.2 percent.

"[A total of] 9580 full-time and 586 part-time candidates from 185 schools across the country wrote the... IEB National Senior Certificate examinations in November 2013," IEB CEO Anne Oberholzer said in a statement on Tuesday.

Any fellow IEB matriculants here on mybb? Congrats!

Wow. Only 10 000 people do IEB? That's a tiny number of people.

Anyone know how many people write the GDE papers?

About 170000... vast majority being part-time student.

56000 fulltime, 130000 parttime.

IEB is only for private schools and not every private school takes IEB, hence the small numbers.

On 7 January individual pupils' results would be available at schools and in print and online media.

The department said its 35 000 markers, working in 118 marking centres, completed their task on 15 December and the subsequent data capturing process had been concluded.

A total of 57 690 full-time and 130 646 part-time candidates sat for the exams in 6699 centres.

The department said it had added security features, including a watermark and a serial number, to the statement of results to be issued to pupils.

GDE.

Where is our resident teacher?
What is the abbreviation they use when a student is passed with help? PWA? The Afrikaans one ( iirc ) is MAH met aditionele hulp ( spelling sorry:o )

Is this displayed on a final grade 12 certificate as well? Or is it seen as discrimination?

My daughters boyfriend (here with us on holiday) got 7 distinctions and 79% for his eighth subject. They are doing a remark to see if he can perhaps get a full house.
Big congratulations being handed out this AM.

If I had that amount of time to study on "school" subjects I'd be getting AAAAAAAAs as well. Once you are in the real world it becomes another story to balance it with work, wife, kids etc etc.

I did my computer programming diploma with 1 kid and helping someone to build a company. Got straight A 's and one C and finished the 4 year diploma in 14 months.
My wife is studying at the moment. Full time job and 3 kids now. Nothing below 80% so far.

Can be done. Hard, but not impossible.

Both you on 8 subjects concurrently?

I don't disagree that it can't be done, but at school level you have ample time for a lot of subjects. Still it deserves a good pat on the back.

I'm probably going to do a few things myself come 2014 :)

Is there somwhere online that you could enrol your kids to do IEB equivalent courses as opposed to attending a physical school...

Both my kids attend the local school here, but of late the results in Maths and Science leave a lot to be desired.... They are top achievers, but I know that the standards in general arenot where they should be.... Said to Head Office that I would like it if the could do additional tuition online in a couple of subjects.... Surely in this day and age, you can be taught online?

So how many distinctions did you get for Matric? :p

Online teaching is the future, but it's not here yet for secondary schooling.

Also, it's interesting how things change when you get older. There is no way that school is a patch on University, yet I still didn't get straight As in Matric.

Have a look at home schooling?

One of my daughters was taking strain at Reddam, so we tried home schooling this year. A lady in Edenvale runs one from her house and has about 20 kids that attend. My daughter is doing much better there.
They follow the Cambridge curriculum.

Aaah strawman approach. Whether or not I had 12 As doesn't make it less true, that is that the real world are far from just going to school and back.

You're the one who said that you could get that many distinctions as well, if you were at school. I'm asking how many distinctions you received when you had the same perspective on life as the graduate. I absolutely agree that if someone who went through varsity or gained some real world experience went back to matric now, that they would probably do quite well. That doesn't mean you can take away from this guy's achievement though.

So true
