Centrally controlled minimal pricing. Some people are so bad at paying their staff that this has to be mandated. Pity not everyone paid a fair wage then the government would not have to step in.

The state is not running an industry here, it is regulating it.

I also dont recall reading about centrally controlled pricing on the communist manifesto.

Reminds me of the Chris Rock joke about minimum wage "as an employer, if i could pay you less, I would..."

Just a question. Would you rather pay a "slave wage" which is still way above the minimum wage or pay no wage?
 
the problem is how could you define "descent" or "fair" wages? what it is? who can define it?

A: R1000 a month.
B: R10000 a month
C: R100000 a month
D: R1 Million a month
E: R1 Billion a month

what is "fair"? A B C D E are all correct. Can't you see what the problem is?

Assuming you have no social support or personal transportation. What do you need to live? (Accommodation, food, transport). Can you get rent, travel and food for R1000 a month?

so you have food to eat, you have free transport and free accommodation, is that imply you don't need salary?

Its not slavery if the person is not working for you.

The point I was trying to make is that I was for example approached by a friend and asked if I didnt have work for their maid on certain days. Even if she works for very little she gets what I can afford and she is grateful for the job. Should I now not employ her because I cannot pay her R500 a day?

Yes, employ the domestic but make sure you are paying her more than minimum wage because it's the law. I am sure everyone has sense enough to assess whether the pay they are getting is worth their while staying on.

I have no clue what you mean or what you just said as I dont see what relevance it has to the question I asked you :confused:

The "assuming" is meant to imply a hypothetical question... :/

Im asking how much you can live off. Assuming (hypothetical situation) you have to pay for your own transport, rent and food.

My domestic gets R18 an hour and works two days a week.

I would love to give her more, but just can't afford it at this stage....

1) you cannot assume how much he / she can survive for R1000. it is because you are not "that" person. that person accepts the offer or not it is entirely up to him/her. if he can't survive for R1000, he will not take the job, otherwise, don't say it is not a decent wage. If the employer cannot employ one to work for R1000. the employer will rise the offer. this is the principle of free market system.

2) you still didn't answer me, is that I don't need to give you salary if I provide you food , transport and accommodation.

Edit: remember nowadays, it is no more slavery. if you are not "force to work", any salary is decent and fair. don't too emotionally to use the words such as "wage slavery", "not decent wages", "slavery" etc.

Department of Labour and the rest of the cadres, stop fv<king up the economy and I will gladly pay more. What I get she gets as far as a increase is concerned.
