Article: Increase domestic workers' salaries: Fedusa

South Africans must discuss wage increases for their domestic workers in light of a minimum wage increase announced by the department of labour, the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) said on Tuesday.

General secretary Dennis George said in a statement: "Employers should rather sit down with their domestic workers and discuss realistic increases linked to the rising cost of living".

This is ideal for people who cannot afford a domestic but would like to stick with one regardless, for the domestic sat least she has a job and affords her option to look for other work whilst having something at least.
 
Most people here, from a previous thread, pay well in excess of the minimum wage. Our domestic can get a raise when we do.
 
I would like to know what the real statistics and demographics are of those who don't actually meet the minimum wage?

I suspect it is a small minority. But once again, there is the danger that forcing an increase may actually result in job losses.
 
I pay well above Minimum wage for my domestic worker.
Plus she gets added benefits of food and drink whilst at work.

I'm already pretty much paying her at the limit of what I can afford, so unfortunately there is no increase on the cards for her.

Seconded. I think mines hourly rate is R21.40 odd if I'm working it out correctly.

My domestic worker works from about 8am till 2pm, and gets paid R120 for that period, so she is earning R20 per hour which is nearly double the minimum rate.
 
I have a problem with min rates as people use it to justify the slave wages they pay - look at me, I pay you 0.00001% more than min rate. I know what its like as it happened to me for many years.

But as mentioned, people on this forum do pay not only more than min wages but actually descent ones.

My wife agreed with me when I said why should we pay our maid a wage that we ourselves could no survive on.

you may pay R100000 per month this is your business. But please don't use it as a guideline the other employers must do the same, otherwise label them as "exploiter". let the employers to determine how much is "fair". Not the government, not the workers and not the unions.

Ask yourself a very fair question, are you willing to buy a tv (or any service) the price which is set by the government and you must pay for it or you like to shop around to see which one is cheaper or best for the value then you make a decision to buy it or not?

Think about it.

Completely agree with you on that.

Granted I wouldn't get out of bed for the money I pay my domestic worker, if I had a choice, but I could survive on the money I pay.. (if I had a similar pay rate for the other 4 days of a week). I only employ a domestic 1 day a week.

Actually I will label them exploiters as its the truth.
 
Basic economics - legislated price increase will shift supply of labour up the curve and move demand down the curve - which means more unemployment.

Fighting for better wages is not communism. Dont know what whack ideology you get that from, but fighting for higher wages is pretty normal across the world and is not at all communist.
