Article: Lions could be extinct within two decades

I always though we had a healthy lion population in SA? Fed by Zimbabweans and Mozimbiquans :p

But on a serious note, not surprising if they deem wild to be non gamepark etc.

yeah, the Lions won't ever win another Currie cup or get past the last place in the super 14.

If you allow commercial hunting of Lions, their populations will be assured for posterity. Just a shame this does not apply to whales and such...

You lost me?

Japan (and a few others) hunt whales for commercial gain.
The more whales you kill the more money you get,
The more money you make the more other boats come and do the same.
Soon few whales left with a few species extinct.

Repeat the above and replace “whales” with fish, Rhino horns, Elephant tusks, Leopard/cheetah/Tiger/seals, all hunted to the brink of extinction.
Sometimes we cross the line until there are no more left.

The greed of mankind exceeds the ability of nature to supply the ever increasing demand.
More people and fewer animals plants means that the balance is no loner there.

I think that they do hunt lions commercially don’t they?
Google “Lion hunting in SA” and more than 1.5 million pages returned. At a glance a number of lodges are offering this service.

Hunting lodges stock their own farms. It's in their best interest not to let them go extinct.

I think antowan is referring to the breeding of lions for that specific purpose. Whales in the wild do no constitute being bred for commercial gain. He does make a point, albeit a sad one.

The point is that with lion hunting, lions are replaced because of the commercial gain. Very different from poaching or hunting animals not bred for that purpose as their numbers are not carefully monitored and controlled.

Ah
The chinese tiger sources must be running dry
