Matric pass rate for 2012 at 73.9%

Cape Town - The matric pass rate for 2012 is 73.9%, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Wednesday.

This is up 3.7% from 2011. The total number of candidates was 647 687.

Last week, Umalusi - the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training - declared last year’s matric examinations fair, valid and credible.

More information to follow.

So 27% could not even manage knowing a third of their work ?

I would like figures of how many of the 73.9% achieved over 50%.....

Bwhahahaha... ja, sure
I knew the Government was "good" at fudging numbers but this one takes the cake.

Tinfoil hats! Get your tinfoil hats here!

Where does your blame lie? With the kids or the education system?

Both.
Lack of discipline, lack of facilities, lack of teachers, lack of skills... Lack of an understanding of the IMPORTANCE of education, after all, Mr Standard 4 has a R280 million house, so why should anyone study?

they are really doing kids an injustice by telling them that they have met the requirements when in fact they haven't

Most of the kids that got a lot of distinctions and exemptions will suffer at varsity. I once watched a Carte Blanche episode of former Matriculants that did exceptionally well in Matric but struggle at a university, because the standards have been dropped by the useless Angie so that she can look good. If there's one thing that Zuma can do right this year, is to reshuffle Angie or even better fire her, he doesn't need her anymore since he has received his second term as ANC president.

The same Angie who received a standing ovation when the results were announced.

Somebody asked who was the problem ..... well there's your answer.

What's to be informed about - needing 30% to pass matric makes a mockery of education.

After 12 years of plodding to school anyone with less than 50% may as well have not bothered - they are all going to end up either jobless or doing unskilled labour.

If you speak to matric teachers they will tell you the exams are pretty much the same standard, its just the pass mark that the government has dropped. But to the same effect though.

I don't remember something called maths literacy in my day.

It sounds like Windows starter version - totally useless.

we had lower grade maths which I suppose was the equivalent. But fair enough, they've introduced some easier subjects, but your university subjects are they same standard

Is it:

1. 73% of people that started grade 1
2. 73% of people that started grade 12
3. 73% of people that pitched for exams
And
1.Does this include the private schools
2. Did they hand free passes to Limpopo mpumalanga and the freestate that didn't have books this year?
