we had lower grade maths which I suppose was the equivalent.
we had lower grade maths which I suppose was the equivalent. But fair enough, they've introduced some easier subjects, but your university subjects are they same standard
What's to be informed about - needing 30% to pass matric makes a mockery of education.
After 12 years of plodding to school anyone with less than 50% may as well have not bothered - they are all going to end up either jobless or doing unskilled labour.
Math lit is.
What is multiplication
What is subtraction.
read the article Sinbad posted- quite enlightening.

There was maths lower and higher grade. I don't think they have higher grade any more and the old lower grade is now the maths standard grade.
Maths literacy is as I understand it way below maths standard grade - essentially it would help you give the right change at the petrol pump.

Jansen has never had anything kind to say about Maths Literacy, which may be right if you’re from a high functioning school which offers Maths. High functioning schools have the resources to train the best Maths teachers, and get their hands on the latest calculators and computer software which assists in the teaching of Pure Maths.
The current mathematics is math higher grade without geometry
however you have to remember that in your days you could have chosen to not take maths at all.
yes it doesDoes it include algebra, trigonometry and calculus ?
You never did series and sequences, which is what they currently do. Hence it is optional. In my days it was obligatory.
What ? I had no idea I was in a "high functioning" school ?
Or was I ? I didn't have the "best maths teacher" , I just had a flimsy hand-me-down handbook and a calculator purchased from Pick n Pay.
I am dumb and lazy though, then even more than now, so with some common sense and chaperoning by my parents I went for extra classes with more books and the same calculator.
Whoever thinks mathematical illiteracy is at the root of SA's credit and irresponsible lifestyle problems, is sorely mistaken.
The current mathematics is math higher grade without geometry
I'm not understanding why geometry is an optional but algebra is part of the subject.
In the 40 odd years since I left school I have never once needed algebra but geometry always comes in useful.
very true, however I bet you never used the very complex geometric theorems and axioms either.
