Article: Matric pass rate improved in 2012

we had lower grade maths which I suppose was the equivalent.

There was maths lower and higher grade. I don't think they have higher grade any more and the old lower grade is now the maths standard grade.

Maths literacy is as I understand it way below maths standard grade - essentially it would help you give the right change at the petrol pump.

we had lower grade maths which I suppose was the equivalent. But fair enough, they've introduced some easier subjects, but your university subjects are they same standard

Math lit is.
What is multiplication
What is subtraction.

read the article Sinbad posted- quite enlightening.

So it's kind of business / home ecc rolled into one minus the cooking part. Interesting.

The kids I know told me its lots of reading work and very little calculation work.

But thanx. Missed that.

To prospective employer, a matric certificate is no different from a school attendance certificate. It just proves you attended school some of the time.

You can join Checkers as a packer, join the army, apply to join the SAPS (but not in Pietermaritzburg please) or become a burden on your parents

The current mathematics is math higher grade without geometry (which is an extra paper that you can write). There isn't much wrong with the curriculum, its the low pass rates that is an issue.

Mathematical literacy is basically bantu education mathematics, however you have to remember that in your days you could have chosen to not take maths at all.

I'd like to know how many matrics who take pure maths on the HG get over 70%.

The figure must be shockingly low, and effectively accounts for most varsity applicants.

Jansen has never had anything kind to say about Maths Literacy, which may be right if you’re from a high functioning school which offers Maths. High functioning schools have the resources to train the best Maths teachers, and get their hands on the latest calculators and computer software which assists in the teaching of Pure Maths.

What ? I had no idea I was in a "high functioning" school ?

Or was I ? I didn't have the "best maths teacher" , I just had a flimsy hand-me-down handbook and a calculator purchased from Pick n Pay.

I am dumb and lazy though, then even more than now, so with some common sense and chaperoning by my parents I went for extra classes with more books and the same calculator.

Whoever thinks mathematical illiteracy is at the root of SA's credit and irresponsible lifestyle problems, is sorely mistaken.

we were not allowed a calculator in exams up until grade 10. And it wasn't a computer which could store the formulas.
A calculator wasn't allowed close to a primary school.
Sorry but these stats are just as cooked as the white households earn 6 times more than black households.

The current mathematics is math higher grade without geometry

I'm not understanding why geometry is an optional but algebra is part of the subject.

In the 40 odd years since I left school I have never once needed algebra but geometry always comes in useful.

very true, however I bet you never used the very complex geometric theorems and axioms either.

Sure.

I'm not a fan of the schooling curriculum either then or now. Way too much rubbish 90% will never ever need to know and will have no use for.
