Article: Mbalula happy with Olympics performance

South Africa's performance at the Olympic Games shows the country is a force to be reckoned with, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said in Johannesburg on Monday.

"South Africa is again emerging as a winning nation," he said.

I could care less of Fikele Mbalula's opinion on our athlete's performance. If he actually gave a rats ass, he would facilitate way more investment into sports development instead of throwing farewell parties and making ridiculous performance commitments on behalf of sports-people he did not care to know 1 week before. Give credit where it is due, you fscking politician, without taking some for yourself.

"This has, without a doubt, been our best Olympics ever," Mbalula said.

Well, compared to the previous ones that is hardly earth-shattering news.

While giving all respect to our medal winners, 6 medals considering the size of our population is dismal.

Mediocrity is nothing to celebrate.

with only 6 medals... Makes a lot of sense

6 is the most medals we have ever achieved since readmission...but we need to win more medals outside of the water. The Kenyans and Ethiopians are having too much dominance in the mid and long distance running. On the track (sprints) I think we can forget it as there are two powerhouses there (Jamaica and USA).

Well, compared to 2008 it is a massive improvement but we most certainly are not a force to be reckoned with. When New Zealand can get twice your medal tally with a tenth of the population size, well then, you really are not a force.

Track events - USA, Russia, then Jamaica.

I think we had only two athletes to speak of in the field events ( decathlon excluded ) - javelin and long jump.

For me the most impressive athlete was Willem Coertzen who came 9th overall in the mens decathlon.

And Barry Stander was almost in the medals yesterday, coming 5th in the cross country mountain bike event.

Well no one remembers even the people that finish 4th in any Olympic event. :p

Kazakhstan as well. I doubt most people even know where that country is.
Jagshemash!! These are the country of a Kazakhstan...where the moustaches of men taste like the testes of their friend, and many a woman have vagine which hang like a sleeve of wizard.

24th place in the medals tally puts us EXACTLY where we aught to be if we're looking at population levels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population

So yes, adequate and mediocre - but not a bad performance.

But Kazakhstan is #62 in those rankings so they pwnd us with 12 medals :D
