Article: Money in a relationship

"I have to make a confession," a young bridegroom said to his bride shortly before their wedding. "I only earn 2,000 dollars a month. Do you think you can make a living with that?"

"In a pinch yes," the bride replies in this old joke. "But what do YOU want to live off?"
Men earn money and women spend it - this cliche is true for less couples compared to just a generation ago. But has the way of handling money among married couples truly changed? Many believe it hasn't. Our relationship towards money is archaic.

I have a very open relationship with my fiancé. We both know what each other earns and our individual expenses. Together, we have a mutual budget that includes a plan as we are looking for our first home.

Being open with finances is vital to the success of any relationship, and be honest as well. Its working for me.

Interesting, I think if each person is earning a okay salary and expenses are split according to earnings to allow each person to have spending money and saving money then therr should be no reason to share.. A common goal such as a house or car can be done in a seperate account..

Money can be a major hurdle in relationships, married or not. Generally I find that one side of a couple tends to be stronger money wise.

In my case, I tend to be far better with money than my wife. Bailed her out of debt three times and then basically sat her down and told her what we're going to do. When she was working, all the money would go into one account, all bills etc would be paid from there, a joint credit card allowed us to spend on what we wanted without buggin each other but a basic rule that she lets me know of any purchases greater than R300. I also transfered a fixed amount into her account each month that she could do whatever she felt like with. Worked well for us, been married happily for 8 years and we are financially secure, although a bit tight now as she's at home with the little one.
