He said the party should not have used either of the leaders.

"It is debatable whether or not her [Suzman's] role can be claimed as revolutionary. More importantly, of having any bearing on the values of the [Democratic Alliance] as a party today," he said.

The pamphlet shows the pair embracing, with the wording: "We played our part in opposing apartheid". It refers to Suzman (an anti-apartheid activist who died in 2009) as a "DA founder".

Suzman was a member of the Progressive Party which became the Progressive Federal Party and later merged with other parties to become the DA.

The DA's communications director Gavin Davis told the newspaper it had every right to use the image and to take ownership of Suzman's role in ending apartheid.

"The values she stood for are defended and promoted by the DA today.... Nelson Mandela is a global icon and national hero. He is not the property of any political party."

History that isn't the ANC's revisionist version is 'cynical and opportunistic propaganda'? Okay then, Marius.

Weren't they both ANC members?

EDIT: Stand corrected, she was a member of the Progressive Party.

Fransman rattled on about the people not believing this misleading advertising.
So if that is true why is he getting so upset?

Anyway Suzman did fight apartheid vigorously. And she was one of the founders of the party that led to the DA.
That is undeniable.

Sneaking Mandela into the frame is just clever marketing

I don't see a problem with the poster. I agree that the DA needs to change its image, because right now they are still seen as the "oppressors". I do however think that using Helen Suzman can be detrimental to them. Was she not quoted as saying something along the lines of hating the Afrikaners, their language, their ways and ofcourse their politics.

Water under the bridge now... there's a bigger enemy on the horizon.

The question is, why didn't they use this marketing years ago when Zuma was up for election? ;) they may as well advertise "Suzman would have wanted to stop Zuma!"

Don't get me wrong, I remember seeing ANC banners advertising "Ghandi would have voted for the ANC if he was alive today" which I thought was quite arrogant, but there is no doubt that the DA is also being opportunistic. In fact the thing that annoys me about the DA the most is that it makes the most of publicity stunts like marching to Zuma's house, offering to deliver textbooks when the ANC can't, sneaking Mandela onto pamphlets, etc.

how about they focus on the here and now and rather than shortcomings of each other, what they can do better for the country

That is true, it is sneaky.

What they can't depute though is that Suzman was part of the struggle, was a hero... and was behind the creation of the DA.

Shortly before her death she also wasn't very happy with the current government. She was also pro-BEE from what I remember, saying that it would at least take a generation of people before the employment in the country could be fixed properly
