The DA also dont brush out people like that. I am reminded of the Athol Trollip vs Helen Zille showdown when Tony Leon left. Athol had asked Bobby to run his campaign for him against Helen and it was a hard fought fight for the leadership. When the votes were being counted, Athol, Bobby and Helen where watching the counting. When it became pretty obvious that Helen was going to win she turned to Bobby and Athol and said something along the lines of, "We fought strongly but I want you to know, when this is over its over. We need to get over this and get back to work"

That was it. There was no reprisals, no character assassinations, no loss of positions. Its totally not like a faction fight in the ANC.

Im just telling you this so you get a better idea of the type of character the party leaders have. They dont seem like the type of party to resort to "Stalinist" type tactics to airbrush out their opponents. If that type of stuff is happening... its more likely to happen in the ANC faction wars than anywhere else.

At my last course, were were discussing ambassadorships that Zuma was handing out to friends as gifts for supporting him and when I asked, "Why was Tony Leon given an ambassadorial position in Argentina?" I was simply told, "Ask him". Dont know what to read into that.

Under Tony Leon the DA became a 1% party for a bit. Also, there are many many previous leaders of the DA that have not been mentioned. So I dont know why they are just stuck on Leon.

Tony Leon of course has a place in DA history, Im not not sure what his role was against Apartheid. Which is what they are currently discussing. He is certainly not airbrushed out. Just what relevance does he have on the specific topic of fighting Apartheid?

In 1974 at the age of 18 he became an organiser for the Progressive Party, one of the two opposition parties represented in parliament at the time. After this, he qualified as an attorney at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was President of the Law Students' Council and Vice-President of the Students' Representative Council, and became a lecturer in the Law Department in 1986. He has accredited Harry Schwarz and Helen Suzman as his biggest inspirations.[2] In the same year he was elected to the Johannesburg City Council for Yeoville. When the results for the election were released, it was announced that the NP candidate Sam Bloomberg had won. However Harry Schwarz, his political mentor, uncovered that this was untrue, and Leon was declared the winner. He became leader of the opposition in the city council.[3]

In 1989 he was elected to Parliament for the Houghton constituency, representing the Progressive Party's successor, the Democratic Party.

From 1990 to 1994 he chaired the DP's Bill of Rights Commission, and as such was an advisor to the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) and a delegate to the multi-party negotiations that led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of a multi-party democracy in 1994.

At the 1994 general elections, Leon was again elected to Parliament in the first democratic National Assembly, as well as leader of the Democratic Party. At the time, the Democratic Party was perceived as merely a minor party of white liberals, an oddity in the first multiracial government of South Africa. Yet between 1994-1999 its seven members managed to become the most vocal, active and involved legislators.

With the second democratic elections in 1999 and the New National Party only retaining 28 seats (down from 82 in 1994), he became Leader of the Opposition as the DP took 38 seats, showing a growth of over five-fold.

After the 2004 general elections, the Democratic Alliance under Leon had a vote increased by 2.8%, as did the ANC with an increase of 3.3%. These gains came at a cost to three of the five minor opposition parties, with only the Independent Democrats — a newcomer in the elections — also attracting support.

I think they left him out, not because of his credentials but because he left a bad taste in the mouth of many people whom the DA is now trying to attract (he was very confrontational)

Its because 49% of rural folk believe that the DA will bring back Apartheid if they govern.

Its not really directed at urban voters and its not meant to say we own the Apartheid struggle. It is mean to just show we did play a small part in it. This whole campaign is built around that 49% belief.

Through sound economic policies and strong service delivery. Did you see all those people in the WC get flush toilets recently?

ANC propaganda is not an assumption, its known. The ANC are driving active campaigns like Operation Reclaim (they are fighting for their lives and spending swathes of cash). I spent the weekend sitting with leaders from rural eastern cape telling me their stories of intimidation and misinformation they are directly experiencing.

DA Launches Film

A film depicting the DA's involvement in ending apartheid will be shown to households across the country, party leader Helen Zille said on Monday.

Launching the film in Cape Town, Zille said it would form part of the "Know your DA" campaign.

"So far we have distributed 800,000 of 2.9 million pamphlets and we've had one-on-one conversations with nearly 300,000 South Africans, most of these by going door-to-door and talking to people in their homes," she said.

Democratic Alliance activists will now show the film during door-to-door campaigning ahead of next year's elections.

"Over the coming two months, 30,000 copies of the film... will be distributed to all of our branches across the country.

The film will be available in English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Xitsonga, siSwati and Afrikaans," said Zille.

The DA hopes to reach one million households with the film over the next two months.

"Each branch will hold weekly house meetings where they will invite South Africans who have never heard our untold story, or who have never voted for the DA before."

Yeah, but our propaganda is the truth. Telling people that the DA is going to bring back apartheid is not the truth.

Im all for bias to your cause, but keep it honest(ish)
