A large amount is paid per pack. Let's at least see your calculations for this medical bill versus the amount that person paid in tax.
Let's see, it's around R10 per pack, 365 packs a year, for say 40 years. That's R146,000. Let's say assume R20 per pack (more like R30 last time I checked), so R2.80 VAT per day, which gives us another R40,880. So each smoker has already contributed more than R185,000 just from direct tax on their drug. But in the end it's swings and roundabouts. Are we going to do this zero sum calculation for everything?

I used to buy into this, but it's a flawed idea.
The guy's family has been affected badly by smoking and just doesnt want others harmed, stop being a ****ing prick.

On the state costs aspect there's evidence suggesting that smokers actually save us taxpayers money.
Not to mention women, black people, Jews and the French.
:erm: Yes, nannies always have some excuse for wanting to micromanage other people's lives.

So telling people to stop smoking because it can lead to really bad health issues later in life is "nannying" and "micromanaging"? You'll never listen to any advise because it's micromanaging you.
You have a rebelious teenager attitude. I would say grow up, but I don't want to "micromanage" you.
If I needed advice on smoking, I'd ask for it.

Let me put it to you this way maybe it'll make more sense to you and yours:
Why do you feel you need to care for me and advise me, such that you try and alter my very existance, and make me miserable in the process? So I'll say it again, "If I want your advice, I'll ask for it." Indulge in your goji berries, and I'll light up once in a while when I feel like it.
The new laws make it impossible for smokers and non-smokers to co-exist in a public/private place purely because non-smokers are hell bent on controlling smoker's lives, and I say to hell with that.
