Article: New transport strategy for SA

The taxi industry can help us create a reliable, safe and affordable transport system for our 50-million strong population," Ndebele told taxi industry representatives in Midrand
I think that placing his hope on the Taxi industry is not a good move. Any industry that are notorious for disregarding the laws, partake in constant strikes and tend to get violent if they don't get their way, should be ignored at best, and totally removed at best, not made part of any possible solutions.

Also, I thought it would have been better to try and remove vehicles from the road, not encourage it?

Incorporating the taxi industry into any plan is the only way forward. It is true that in 1994 there was no real transport system in place for most of the population. They stepped in and filled the gap - entrepreneurs I think they are called. The taxi industry is far too big, wealthy and powerful now to be sidestepped, any future transport system will happen with their blessing or not at all...

I have to differ:
  • The taxi industry is run by people that act like the mafia.
  • They don't follow any rules but their own.
  • Just because they provided a function out of necessity, doesn't make them valid today.
  • A high percentage of taxi's shouldn't even be on the road.
  • When an organization threaten to sabotage efforts to improve public transport, they should not have any right to stay, as they obviously have only have their own interest at heart.
  • Any future transport system that have the blessing of the taxi industry, will be doomed to fail, unless there is a major change in how taxis operate.

Joelus is right here. The only way forward is with the Taxi "industry".

The first step should be to formalise the Taxi industry, allot routes and a common ticketing system so that due taxes are paid. Any taxi found conveying passengers outside the rules should be impounded and his route assigned to someone else.

That was the initial idea I think, plus obviously regular checking of vehicles, maintenance and driver adherence to the rules of the road.

But...... never gonna happen. Government has no balls.

And thats the just of it.

Unfortunately that's what we have to work with.
Whining about it, or putting them all in jail isn't going to solve the problem.
Government has to work with the industry.

Who is whining?
I just gave my opinion on the matter. In the end neither me, nor you, have any say in what government does.
The only solution that will work for the taxi industry, is if they are declared the sole provisioner of public transport.
That however, will not make us a "developed nation".

Haven't they tried this before? The only outcome was taxis striking, or threatening to do so, and nothing further happened.

I love taxi strikes. It brings some peace to the roads. And for some reason most of our staff still manages to get to work, so I'm not sure if the taxi industry is as vital is it think it is.

I'm all for the Taxi Industry being involved in whatever public transport we have in this country.. BUT the industry as a whole needs to be brought into line... In the last 3 days of driving to work a taxi has tried to take me out every day simply because he wanted to cross 5 lanes of traffic to get to his turning....

Lol.
"Uuuuuh we don't know what to do and its too difficult. Let's just use the taxis. And when things go wrong everyone hates them anyway."
