I dunno... I heard an EWN news thingy on 702 yesterday where they played a recording in which police spokesperson at the scene actually said that the case contained an explosive device and had to be disarmed in a control detonation.

Perhaps not making it up per se, but instantly reporting without corroboration.

Explosive device > box of wires when it comes to news.

They probably edited the recording to take out any indication of suspicion. "We suspect there is a bomb" to "<snip>There is a bomb"

Easy to lie if it was an employee of said jewellery story or something.

You have a suspect and he'll be caught, no need to tell people: "There was a bomb, but the culprit has been caught" vs "There was no bomb, it was a hoax"

The Citizen reported;

According to the police, at about 11am the centre’s manager received information from an unknown man that he had received a note stating there was a bomb in the building.
The manager contacted the Bedfordview police, who responded to the call and arrived at the scene with their dog unit and bomb squad.

The dogs quickly tracked down a suitcase containing a suspected explosive device next to a jewellery store in the centre, police spokesman Katlego Mogale said.

So it was not just EWN doing a cut & paste.

Actually, it was once again News24 that ran with the bomb story. EWN was all along just saying that it was "a device".

News24 called it a bomb in their headline.

Anyways, this whole farce was once again the SAPS and the Media's fault.

They need to learn to stick to the facts.

I think they did the right thing. To be 100% sure you have to. You don't go digging through it with your hands to see if it is a real bomb or not.
When you have a threat of a bomb, then just blow it up to be sure.

That was pretty stupid. But I guess they know more about explosives than we do. Maybe they know the contents of the case can't cause X amount of damage.

Actually, the police don't really give a crap. In fact the entire government doesn't give a crap about sales.
Why do you think they are going ahead with the Tolling system despite the fact that it will have a massive impact on shopping, prices and transport?

Silly question... It is reported (for what that's worth) that sniffer dogs found the briefcase with the "bomb" in. Surely the dogs are trained to find specific substances (a guess). If sniffer dogs went bananas over wires in a box they would be useless. So what was in the briefcase that triggered the dogs?
