Article: Outrage over Malema calling Indians "coolies"

Ha ha, just as I was commenting how nice it is not to see his name in the news. The media should just ban any mention of his name.

He wasn't speaking in Zulu, but he was speaking in Pedi. In Zulu the Indians are called AmaNdiya and most people in KZN know that the term amakula is offensive as we live side by side. However, people from other provinces other than KZN don't seem to be aware of this. I had to correct my wife so many times about this as she was not aware that the term was offensive.
 
The term coolie has perfectly benign and innocent uses as well. I've quite often heard SA Indians use it of and between themselves in a gently ironic way, much like Charra. There's a gradation of offensive terms, and this one is mild at worst. I'm well aware of the ugliness of slurs and the importance of removing racism from our society (having spent time in detention without trial under the previous regime). This is a storm in a teacup and should not be allowed to deflect us from the real ugliness of Malema's policies and demagoguery.
 
I'm from Limpopo and must admit every pedi person there calls Indians 'makula'. I only found out the term is offensive recently. :o

Ja but you know its okay for people in the same race group to use racist or offensive terms when speaking to each other. I have black friends who call each other the K word but that doesn't mean they won't be offended by a person in another race group using the K word to refer to them.

I happen to be from KZN, with an indian girlfriend, and was not aware of the word amakula...
 
My thoughts on this - I don't see these terms as racial slurs. I see them as the uncouth, unmannered, scumbag section of any particular ethnic group. Fortunately they're in the minority.

So,
You get Indian people, and you get coolies.
You get Coloured people, and you get bushies.
You get Black people, and you get kaff*rs. Malema is a kaff*r.

Not that I use any of these terms, but if I did, the first time it would be aimed at Malema.

The term was used as a racial slur in order to insult and belittle Indian citizens .

Your argument would equally apply to my using K**F*R

Coolie was used during British colonial times as a word to describe the guys who waved the fans to keep the masters cool.

It is highly offensive... just like you wont use the k-work here you wont use coolie in India.

I'm pretty sure Makula is derived from coolie

I agree with your post, I call every race racist names (including my own) when they act like C to the UNTS

Agreed, and this time the slur isn't at one individual group but the entire race.
