Article: Owls are being decapitated

So typical africa , Like in maputo you wont find a single pigeon or pretty much most birds in the city because the locals have eaten them all.

So there is no truth in the rumour that it is because of what pigeons say?

I did a road trip a few years ago and part of that was through Botswana and Zambia. In Botswana there is plenty of wildlife alongside the road (Francistown to Chobe). Zambia, nothing. All been munched.

Maybe for variety ??

LEt me make some Broad Statements (Yes painting with the biggest brush ever I know about the: its not everybody clause. )

Black South African people are the most petrified variety of humans I have read about and come across . They are scared of the most ridiculous crap starting with the White Gevaar all the way through cats, rats, snails owls down to the big old scary Tsotsi and ancestors

Must be a crappy life being scared of your own shadow.

So it seems this story is BS. They've spoken to the EcoSolutions guy on 702 twice now (that I've heard) and he says they haven't been able to find anything substantiating the alleged incidents. And the reporter who wrote the original story also didn't actually have anything. He couldn't produce witnesses, photos, or anything substantiating the story other than the email sent by Owl Rescue, which apparently don't even have a license to 'rescue' owls...

Well without an actual owl count it's hard to just dismiss it as BS , the blue collar black people that work for us (similar to who you'd find in Alex) told me that most blacks do indeed associate Owls with witchcraft and they would kill them to wards of evil spirits.

I really hope things have changed there and the community has been educated but I think it's too soon to call it BS just yet especially without an Owl count.

EcoSolutions run the project, and while he didn't mention an owl count specifically, he said there are about 60 owl boxes across JHB. I'm sure they would have checked them when this story first came to light.

Also said it's been running since '98 in JHB generally (and 2012 in Alex), and this hasn't happened before. Something like 80k+ kids have gone through the program and are very enthusiastic about it.

One part of the story was that schoolkids had snipped an owl's wings and legs off, but he said they actually had schoolkids bring an owl in a box to them which was hurt and they had taken care of it. So yeah...

You need a license to 'rescue' owls?

Thinking about it, it does seem to be a strange story. I don't think owls are that easy to catch in the first place and if you are afraid of an owl, would you really climb a pole and try to wrestle one out of its box? I don't think they would be easy to handle. An owl bite is painful enough, let alone those kicking talons.
The rumour may just be from someone who is holding a grudge against the rescue people or something. The charity sector is rife with envious, bitter and spiteful people, sadly.

Very large plastic sheet over Alex and pump in CO2. Sort out the rat problem. And probably have some other benefits too.

So you're proposing mass genocide for the residents of Alex?On what bases? Is it because of their wealth status or their race?

I know you meant it as a joke but to joke about an entire population of people with genocide is not very funny, its sick.

Where on earth do you get that from?

What other benefits?Obviously pumping CO2 in there will kill all living things including the residents.

So you think the residents of Alex are dumb enough to hang around while the place gets covered in plastic?

Other benefits include killing off other pests and vermin as well as allowing the Owls to be redeployed out of harms way.
