Article: Pallo Jordan resigns

I sort of admire him for walking away. Most of our politicians tend to cling even harder when caught doing worse than just lying about qualifications, most only leave when hauled off to jail or fired.

big ups to him for at least having the ethics now to man up and resign. although i guessing he has enough contacts now to let this not be a big bummer in his life or wealth.
one could hope that this would set an example for all those lot of colleagues in the ANC to man up to their fraud as well.... but not likely.
besides, Zuma seems to have an unlimitted supply of incompetent and unethical friends/family/comrades who could take their place, so wouldnt make a real diff to government setup

I am trying very hard to give him credit - There is not many high ranking ANC members I have rerspect for - he is still one of those I thought was one of the good guys, all I can say is damn you ANC. The rotten amongst you are outranking the ones I thought were, "the few good men".

What I'm saying is, he did wrong, got caught and he exits. There are some many other high ranked government officials that were caught out and are sill in their positions.

This is how politicians shold react when there proof of their guilt. It does not over ride the fact that he lied to get a cushy MP position but atleast he knows how to hang his head in shame and step down.

I disagree. His intention was to lie in mislead the public. He should be arrested and tried, but this is cANCer and by the sounds of it he will even get a golden handshake. For all I care he should be stripped of all his money, given to a poor community and he can go live on the street.

No sympathy from me.

No fan of the ANC, the majority are crooked scoundrels, but this chap was actually one guy that came with some intellectual pedigree, all be it not an official academic one.

If you had to line up all their MP's and pick a list of who to fire first, he would not be nearly near the top for me.

You don't need a degree to be wise.
Clearly you need some woodwork though ;)

He falls on his sword, at least honor is not dead.
Better than some of his comrades, past present and future.

Agreed.
A clever liar.
But still a liar.

Give him credit. He does the honorable thing. Not like certain other persons currently in the news for misrepresenting their qualifications.

He resigned because he got caught out, had he not been caught he would still be riding the wave. This guy should be prosecuted, its fraud at a top level, there are countries that would execute for this.

You CANNOT admire him form walking away.

He gladly would of accepted accolades if he was not found out.

He abused his title for gain.

He is a FAKE and a FRAUD like many of his comrades.

Disgrace to South Africans.

Agreed, wish this was the standard behaviour in this country for politicians getting caught out. Most of the time they just go to ground and then get redeployed.

that sabc fraudster d00s must be laughing his bum off at pallo's resignation..

He probably faked that as well ..

"A man of comrade Pallo Jordan's intellect does not need to perpetuate deceit;

A real intellectual wouldn't have done it in the first place. Neither would an honorable/man of character so stop trying to sugar coat it, he's no less of a liar & fraud than Zuma.

The only thing that counts for him is that he's acknowledging the game is up and he's walking away like a man. Way too many prepubescent boys pretending to be men in the ANC.

Glad he resigned - at least he shows some shame unlike many of the other fraudsters still sitting pretty after being caught out.

He was an arrogant mofo though - met him a couple of times.

Two of my colleagues (over 35 years old), confessed they had never heard of Pallo Jordan.

I was shocked.

Some say resigned, others say "political holiday". Pretty sure he'll be ready for redeployment in year or two.

PALLO JORDAN LIES ON CV

Opinion Piece: But he lied! The Pallo Jordan circus continues

One cannot help thinking that perhaps our society has lost all grip on reality when it suddenly becomes socially acceptable to tell a massive lie - and then be praised for it. Watching the Pallo Jordan saga unfold, it's amazing how many South Africans have come out in support of the man previously known as "Dr" Pallo Jordan.

Having been exposed for falsifying his qualifications on his CV, Jordan, who is a former minister of arts and culture, minister of environmental affairs, and minister of posts, telecommunications and broadcasting -disappeared and refused to comment on the newspaper's revelations. He has since resurfaced to resign his seat in parliament. This, according to the ANC Youth League, is a show of humility. But it doesn't end there.

Since the Sunday Times broke the story of Jordan's false doctorate, a number of well-known South Africans have come out in support of him. Politsweb reported that our very own Gauteng Education MEC Professor, Mary Metcalfe came to his defence on Facebook, saying that "CVs sometimes contain abbreviated information".

Politsweb also quoted Professor Steven Friedman, director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Johannesburg as having said on Facebook that "formal qualifications are not necessarily a good test of a person's intellectual abilities".

This week, ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, said that Jordan, had remained "true to his character, resigned and apologised to the ruling party and people of South Africa".

It's even been reported by News24 that the ANC Youth League said it would engage its structures in tertiary institutions to start a process of ensuring that South African universities conferred honorary doctorates on Jordan for his "immense contribution" in the promotion of literary work and the development of democracy.

Have we completely lost the plot? The fact is that Jordan told a lie. This is not an insignificant half-truth, but a blatant and inexcusable deceit - and one which most likely contributed to the rapid rise of his political status.

What sort of message are we sending out to society when this level of deceit becomes socially acceptable? What are we saying to those individuals that literally sacrifice years of their personal time to obtain a real doctorate? That their qualifications are not worth the paper they are printed on? If any of us can simply add a title to our name, and begin applying for jobs we are not qualified to do, then I fear that our society is going one way.

I am not for one moment suggesting that hard-won experience, hard work, dedication and working your way up to any employment position is not credible. We see this happen every day, and it's perfectly acceptable, even admirable. The point is that Jordan was not upfront and open about his lack of a doctorate.

The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service has just issued a warning to prospective job seekers, cautioning that lying about qualifications is a serious act of fraud. So serious in fact, that should an employer find out that the applicant lied about their qualifications, the employer is perfectly within their rights to lay a criminal charge against the applicant.

So while the lesser mortals of society may face jail time, another ANC stalwart is hailed as a hero and gets away with the type of fraud and corruption that's become all to commonplace in our country.

Enough is enough. I for one am tired of living in a country that not only tolerates this type of behaviour, but even makes light of the fact. What's your view?

DA COMMENDS JORDAN'S RESIGNATION

Pallo Jordan's resignation from Parliament was in the best interests of the National Assembly, the ANC, and himself, the DA said on Tuesday.

"This must have been a difficult decision. We respect his choice to take responsibility for his actions," Democratic Alliance chief whip John Steenhuisen said in a statement.

"There are many other individuals in Parliament who have disgraced themselves much more seriously, who have chosen to avoid accountability at all costs."

While the DA could not condone Jordan's dishonesty regarding his academic qualifications, they acknowledged his contribution to the political discourse in South Africa.

"Indeed, one does not require a doctorate to be able to formulate and debate ideas," Steenhuisen said.

"We have often disagreed and debated vigorously with Jordan, but we have always done so constructively. In so doing, he has earned the DA's respect as a public intellectual."

However disappointing the revelations about his academic qualifications may be, the DA wished Jordan the best in whatever he endeavoured to do next.

On Monday, African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe said in a statement Jordan had resigned from Parliament and apologised to the ANC after reports that his qualifications were false.

Jordan had also offered to resign from the national executive committee (NEC) of the ANC and from the ANC.

"True to his character, he has apologised to the ANC, its membership and South Africa as a whole," Mantashe said.

"A man of comrade Pallo Jordan's intellect does not need to perpetuate deceit; he must be given time to deal with his guilt. As the ANC, we have accepted his public apology; to apologise was not an action of the faint-hearted."

Mantashe said the ANC received a detailed explanation from Jordan on Monday on claims that his qualifications were false.

The ANC national officials had accepted his resignation from Parliament, but his resignation from membership of the NEC and the ANC have been referred to the structures of the organisation, he said.

The Sunday Times reported last week that no evidence could be found that Jordan, who goes by the title "Dr" had ever had an honorary doctorate bestowed on him.

Jordan had no degrees or diplomas from the University of Wisconsin-Madison or the London School of Economics (LSE), the two institutions cited on his CV.

He had no formal tertiary academic qualifications whatsoever, the publication reported.

What sort of message are we sending out to society when this level of deceit becomes socially acceptable?

The same kind that says Zuma is entitled to a R240mil house courtesy of the taxpayer? Or that ministers can buy multi-million rand cars during a recession, and waste money as if there's no tomorrow? Or that schoolbooks needn't be delivered and whomever demand you do be taken to court. Or that lying your way into top management is not only acceptable, but forgivable and admirable?

There's something seriously wrong with the morals of the ruling party.

So while the lesser mortals of society may face jail time, another ANC stalwart is hailed as a hero and gets away with the type of fraud and corruption that's become all to commonplace in our country.

The crux of the matter really. The ANC thinks politics trumps the law and that liars and thieves must be protected from those they stole from.

Politsweb also quoted Professor Steven Friedman, director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Johannesburg as having said on Facebook that "formal qualifications are not necessarily a good test of a person's intellectual abilities".

Someone doesn't understand the issue.
