Article: Pay increase for domestic workers

Domestic workers will have a wage increase with effect from Thursday, the department of labour said.

The minimum wage for those working 27 ordinary hours a week in area A would increase from R9.12 to R9.85 an hour and from R246.30 to R265.94 a week, said spokesman Page Boikanyo.

Hmmm, my domestic gets increase same time I do and I give her normally 10%. She certainly earns more than this basic rate though.

This has to be a joke R9.85 an hour!??

Damn life is a b!tch, at the end of the month this equals to barely ~ R1,050

Wow...With the high prices on food, electricity at the end of the day, they probably don't save anything in the bank account because, they can't.

No wonder people are striking all over the places around here, it's not getting any cheaper to live.

I dont think too many people would be upset if that was pushed up more.

Much more, perhaps double .

Damn i already pay well above that, 150 plus food so let's call it 170 for 8 hours of so. You get those cheap fkers who will try and pay them 9 rand for sure though.

Honestly i could not imagine working all week and still having to clean. Plus it gives someone a job. I would much rather use those hours to chill or make more money :D.

Agreed, good post.

Gives me time to chill and someone gets to put food on the table (although not with that shocking 10 bucks an hour)

At our 2nd last meeting regarding the safety of our residential complex, we identified the domestic workers as a problem! Fortunately almost half the residences are not bothering with a domestic anymore and the tendency is that number will increase even more. If you really want to help the (previously) disadvantaged, give some money/old clothes etc, to your church or charity. Its safer! And you'll help more then one family. And besides - having a domestic is so much like 20th century or should I say "the old South Africa".

So employing someone to do some housework while you work is "old South Africe"? Really? I'm not doing it to help the previously disadvantaged, I'm doing it so I come home to a clean home before the weekend and that my family and I have more time together and not wasted on chores that can be done by paying someone else to do it. Thats actually called stimulating the economy by the way as well.

Domestic workers is a big security risk. We have now been domestic worker 'free' for 3 months and I intend to keep it that way.

Most companies will pay the absolute minimum they can get away with.
Why should households be any different?

Our domestic worker is totally overpaid considering the quality of her work. But with the stupid labour laws in place there's not a lot we can do about it. (We pay more than double the minimum). Also thus far she;s only stolen coffee and toilet paper, compared to the previous one who helped herself to a couple of laptops and a bunch of jewellery ...

argh.

Mine stole diamond rings and gold coins (was stupid that my mother didn't put them in the safe) as well as rare old coins and who knows what else.

I find it quite funny how people will take to the streets and demand jobs and more money and then as soon as they get into a place of work they steal whatever they can, therefore putting them out of work. Retards in this country I tell you!
