Apparently from what I hear...compared to the salaries earned by the rock drillers @ Lonmin or whatever its called I am on bloody minimum wage! tsk. My wife would definitely use the full service ones but then again I do most of the fill ups.

I want the choice to be able to use a self service petrol station if the price of petrol is cheaper at that filling station.

Johannesburg - Eighty percent of South Africans think petrol attendants provide an invaluable service, according to a survey by a fuel company released on Friday.

South Africa is one of the few countries where petrol attendants are still operating petrol pumps for customers, Caltex said.

There are about 50 000 petrol attendants employed in South Africa, of which Caltex retailers employ about 10 000 at their 750 branded stations across the country.

According to the survey, 52% of South Africans always tip attendants. The majority tipped R5.

Ninety-seven percent of South Africans also visited the same petrol station each time they needed to fill up.

This was because of the "friendly, welcoming staff who offer great service", according to the survey.

"The figures from the survey and this great accomplishment show that it's not just the premium fuels that keep customers coming back but that customer service, facilities and local relevance also play a huge role," said Geraldine McConnach, programmes and training manager for Caltex.

"This is a true reflection of their hard work and commitment to service delivery."

The public have spoken. Leave the petrol attendants alone!

You pump yourself in the US and UK. My friends in the UK laughed when I told them that back home we have folks that do it for you.

Honestly, are they that necessary? Maybe so for old folks/some ladies, but really, are you incapable of pumping tyres, putting a nozzle in your car and checking your own oil? It's not a skill to be fair.

In this day and age of penny counting if I could save somewhere I would gladly do it and pump attendants are not vital to my filling session.

But anyway, they will stay. One can only imagine the schit storm if they were to be made redundant.

BUT I can see why we need to create employment for them, still don't know why the increase is so high though.

Those extra cents adds up and applies to everything that is transported on our roads, maybe a few "cents" for you but those of us who travel far and often it is going to hurt.

Not sure why they think it's funny. Petrol attendants disappeared because it was more profitable to do without them. The UK also doesn't have staff who pack your groceries and they're now starting to eliminate as many tellers as possible. Of course whether the public is really saving money overall from that who can say. They stayed in place here because the government made sure to provide plenty of cheap labour. So let's say we eliminate those jobs here now, those people will just claim unemployment for six months, then either have to rely on other social service support or turn to crime.

It's also not true that you pump your own everywhere in the US.

There are also plenty of other countries where they still exist.
