Article: Plain package cigarettes

All cigarettes sold in Australia will be in identical, plain packages from Saturday in a world first after the government overcame legal challenges from the tobacco industry.

Under new laws which come into effect on December 1, all tobacco products must be sold in drab, olive-brown packets with expanded graphic health warnings which feature images such as gangrenous feet and mouth cancer.

You know if it was me I would have kept all those old packets since I heard of this law coming into effect and everytime I bought a pack of smokes I would take all the cigarettes out, put them all in the old packet and throw the new one away. If it was me.

Oh yeah, now I'll definitely stop smoking. After all, it's all about the pretty colours on the packet, surely?

They may be doing the tobacco companies a favour. They spend millions redesigning their packaging every 6 months or so and it is also probably cheaper to produce these boxes.

True, it's not like you're going to stare at the packet all day long.
I remember the packets in Egypt had some pretty nasty pictures on them, but after seeing the same bad pictures everywhere (the people there smoke A LOT) you get desensitised and don't even notice the picture/warning anymore.

Notwithstanding the people (according to the article) that don't believe smoking is bad for you, I'm pretty sure most people know this and have kind of accepted it. At the end of the day it is a choice you make.

Somehow I doubt the consumer will feel this saving...

There is going to be a massive boom in the market for cigarette holders/cases in Australia. Anybody want to start a business?

In Singapore they have some really gruesome pics on the boxes. I recall thinking "shame, that person must be a whole load of pain" while sucking on a Marlboro...

How about pictures of fat people on your KFC/McDonalds burger box?

It's going to be a bit of a bugger telling whose smokes are on the table. :p
