Article: Platinum strike talks deadlocked

Talks to end the three-month wage strike by Amcu in the platinum sector have deadlocked, the producers said on Thursday.

Anglo American Platinum Limited, Impala Platinum Holdings Limited and Lonmin advised that no resolution had been achieved, said Charmaine Russel, spokeswoman for the producers.

If these workers ever go back to work they will be so weak from starvation they won't be able to work.

Wait until these guys do eventually get their wishes and then suddenly get pissed of when SARS gets a chunk in paye. We demand 14500 and no tax! Phanzi SARS Phanzi !!

IF they have a work to go back to...

Keep in mind the loans they took out to cover their basics while out on strike... this all adds up.

Wizards' First Rule.

I did not think they would last this long, does air really provide nutrition? :D

They seem to be surviving a long time considering they all clammed to have no money at all.

I think Anglo and Lonmin should call their bluff and say they're forced to close the mines now because of all the strikes.

You'll see the ruling party quickly rapping their unions over the knuckles as it means the economic growth of the country will now definitely do a backslide.

They love to claim a growth year on year DESPITE the fact that the ruling party does everything in their power for this country NOT to grow. Imagine how our economy would look like if they actually gave a crap

I SAY CLOSE THE MINES ANGLO/LONMIN, TEACH THESE PEOPLE A VERY HARD LESSON!

After 3 months of "no work, no pay" they have lost 25% of their annual income. So, even if they get a 25% increase now, they will be just as bad off as before the strike for at least a year. Damn Unions.

Typical union BS.
More more more for the bosses and f-all for the workers.

This happens time and time again.
Might as well close the mines because that`s the route they're going making industry so expensive in this country.

I have experienced the unions ruining ppls lives first hand at my previous company.
Union members were given their demands yet the heads told them that management were not willing to give their increases, why?
Because the heads wanted more.
So the members striked for almost 3 months in order to get 10% rather than 8%.
After talks it came to light that many of the members were told they would all receive the 8% increase evetually decided on by Union heads; yes 8% which was the original agreement.
But in truth the agreement between management and the Union heads was to standardize pay rates across the board to even the playing field.
What this meant was some members already on that level who were now striking for 2 months were in fact getting 0%.

Good thing that they're asking for more than a 100% increase then.

So surely the Platinum Mining Companies have presented the following figures to the union:

e.g:

Annual Revenue R100
Employee Costs R60
Operational Cost R30
Profit R10

and if we give you R12500:

Annual Revenue R100
Employee Costs R120
Operational Cost R30
Profit R-50

and we close down, bankrupt.

Or am I missing something here and it is more like a reduction in profit? If the Mines can show AMPOO that they would in fact make a loss if they implement the wages, then who can argue with that?

You are missing something. You're missing the fact that unions don't care about insignificant things like economics or reality. All they care about is getting money from their members, and to get that they have to be seen as brave heroes sticking it to the man who is always out to exploit the poor, innocent wekkas.
