Article: Ramaphosa speaks about Die Stem

South African leaders need to reach out to those in the Afrikaans-speaking and African communities on their concerns about singing the full national anthem, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday.

Ramaphosa was responding to questions from journalists in Cape Town on whether he thought the refusal by some prominent South Africans to sing the full national anthem meant the country's social cohesion project was failing.

I hope singing Die Stem becomes a tradition at Afrikaans festivals. It would be pretty awesome! :D

"Social cohesion project" ...sounds very interesting. Sometimes I feel these leaders are just dropping a bunch of fancy words because they want to please everyone so very badly. Almost like these latest batch of "consultants" in SA.

Everyone who doesn't fit into an official job category is now a "consultant". LOL! :p

I think the current combined National anthem is one of the best anthems in the world.

The vast majority of anthems are just hymns or some boring la-dee-da that in no way really represents or illustrates the culture of the people of the country.

Our anthem is freaking kickass!

Why?

We have one national anthem. Get with the times. The same goes for both sides of the fence.

+1. I am Afrikaans and believe that "Die Stem" is a wonderful anthem but equally so is Nkosi sikelel. Why can people not take pride in the fact that we have an amazing and unique social setup in SA and that if we work together we could be world leaders instead of 10,000 mini tribes?

I still know people that have the old flag in their homes. Some people will just never move with the times.

There is nothing South African about Nkosi Sikelele....

We actually need a new anthem. One uniquely South African, without any baggage attached, to help us build a national identity.

"May whatever divine being or beings that you worship bless SA.
If you don't believe in divine beings then may SA just have some good luck.
Unless you don't believe in luck in which case just hope that nothing bad happens to SA."

Nope...it just doesn't quite have the same ring to it. But at least it would be unique and wouldn't have any baggage attached.

Our heritage has many things to be proud of, and many things to be ashamed of. Much like Germany.
Die Stem is not one of those things to be proud of

:erm: Why not? The hymn itself is beautiful. It might have some bad connotations.

Agreed

Thank **** you're not actually a songwriter :p

Those bad connotations are the reason. Much like the Swastika has it's origins in peace, it's usage by the Nazi's has made it offensive
