Article: Rat infestation in East Rand

An infestation of Norway rats on Gauteng's East Rand has become so bad that some Katlehong residents have nicknamed the area Ratlehong, the Sunday Times reports.

"They are as big as my size nine shoe... my two big dogs deal with them," businessman Mlungisi Galawe told the newspaper.
 
The east rand seems to be an attractive destination for rats :whistle:...
 
"Other people throw them in the streets after killing them, which means one gets to see many dead rats daily."

But isn't that defeating the purpose of killing them in the first place? :confused:
 
You can see them even in Alberton CBD... around the ring road.
They are huge and they brazenly run in the streets and on the islands among the vegatation on the medians.
 
Hello, James. Welcome. Do you like the island? My grandmother had an island. Nothing to boast of. You could walk around it in an hour, but still it was, it was a paradise for us. And after a month, you have trapped all the rats, but what do you do then? Throw the drum into the ocean? Burn it? No. You just leave it and they begin to get hungry. And one by one...

Apparently these residents haven't watched Skyfall yet..

they start eating each other until there are only two left. The two survivors. And then what? Do you kill them? No. You take them and release them into the trees, but now they don't eat coconut anymore. Now, they only eat rat. You have changed their nature. The two survivors. This is what she made us.

Cultural fear of owls ... The owl population has been wiped out, and so the rats proliferate.
 
We removed at least 15 of them from society in the last few months. Rats, not politicians.
 
I stayed in a Wealthier part of east rand and I was shocked by their BTW attitude about rats, to them it was just one of those things

lol, your average adult house snake would eat that with no issues :) Sa rock pythons, mole snakes and many more non venomous would also have a field day.
