Article: Regional number plates considered for SA

The transport department is considering introducing uniform vehicle number plates to be used in all provinces, the Business Day reported on Tuesday. This comes just a few months after Gauteng launched a new series of aluminium number plates.

Not sure if I follow, basically he's saying we should all have the same style of plate with the provincial logos being different? Would we then get random numbers/letters like in GP or location/number like in KZN? A national adapatation of the latter would be useful.

Pretty sure it's more than just a money making racket, it works for the EU, why can't it work here?

Nope I think its only about the money. What's wrong with the current number plates ?

If it ain't broke why fix it ?

I think it would be the same countrywide i.e. everybody would have ZA/RSA/or whatever is decided. The logo would then distinguish the province.

My concern is that there may not be enough permutations available depending on how many letters &| numbers are chosen.

the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing (except when it passes some money under the table)! :rolleyes:

WTF is it with these idjits wanting to change stuff that isn't bloody well broken... leave it be ffs.

I'd be interested to know what involvment the minister had with the decision to use those crappy metal frames that new cars have?

That's the way with socialists, statists and tyrants. They can't stand diversity (unless it's sexual, because it keeps people distracted). For them 'equality' means uniformity - the same drabness for everyone. Bah!

The ones from KZN and Western Cape are still stuck in the past though.

So because its from the apartheid era it needs to be changed?

I think the setup in the WC works quite well.

CA = Cape Town
CY = Bellville
CFM = Somerset West
CEY = Strand
CL = Stellenbosche
CJ = Paarl
CEO = Grabow
etc

I remember driving with my father who was a long distance truck driver trying to guess which city each number plate was from. Even the map books back then had list of the different cities and the letters in their number plates.
