I think the setup in the WC works quite well.

CA = Cape Town
CY = Bellville
CFM = Somerset West
CEY = Strand
CL = Stellenbosche
CJ = Paarl
CEO = Grabow
etc

I remember driving with my father who was a long distance truck driver trying to guess which city each number plate was from. Even the map books back then had list of the different cities and the letters in their number plates.

As with Durban:

ND - Durban & surrounds
NPN - Pinetown
NUR - Umhlanga
NU - Upper highway
NUD - Underberg

Does this mean that you cannot licence a vehicle in DBN if you live in Pinetown? Sorry I left DBN before I could understand that system.

I think it had something to do with the way vehicle licensing used to work. There was no conversation between the different municipalities. I am fairly sure it didn't matter where you got your car registered - that was usually done by the place you bought it but it could become a schlep come renewal time. About 5 years ago there was still a struggle in Joburg as to where you went to renew. Supposedly a single system by then but the various offices got paid a commission. Now you can go to a post office.

Nope... in Natal it indicates where the owner lives and is registered...

I currently have to relicense my vehicle since I've moved to Pinetown and will need to get it re-registered to get NPN number plates for when my renewal comes through.

Indicates where it was registered.

Usually you'll do it where you live so there is a one to one match. Not always the case though.

Quite a few people wanted to get inland registration plates because there was the view that they had better resale value having not been rusted to hell.
