Article: SA crime down: UN

The United Nations' latest report on crime shows South Africa has halved its murder rate, government said in a statement on Friday.

"Government has and continues to, through the justice, crime, prevention and security cluster, ensure that steps are taken to fight and reduce crime," government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said.

Lol, the figures from 95 probably include all those killed in political violence at the time. The figures for the last couple years have not changed much.

From our government/police

Their statement and by taking your post (#3) into account do not concur, the murder stats available since 2004 have a very little deviation and I agree with your assumption by taking political violence in regard. Today Nyanga alone have more murders than any other province combined in SA.

People really don't like good news, do they...

If the report said murder was up most would agree with it without question. Sad.

People don't trust anything based in government information. Can't blame them but actually on this matter they are wrong. South African murder rate is heavily under the microscope and very difficult to fake given all the non government institutions involved. But we still have a country with massively too much violent crime so let's not get carried away.

You did not read my or ponder's comment on this issue, check the crime over the last 10 years:

That is a very small deviation over 10 years. The UN report indicate:

Williams said the UN's report hailed South Africa's trend of halving the murder rate from 64.5 per 100,000 people in 1995 to 31 in 2012.

I hear you. But as mentioned many would gladly accept an increased murder rate though. If you are going to dismiss positive stats you can't then accept negative ones from the same source.

Internationally murder rates are the one statistic that is generally accepted as not being open to too much, if any, manipulation.

For those interested, the full report is here: http://www.unodc.org/gsh/

Violent crime is down. I agree. In my line of work I know of two cases of people murdered in my small part of jhb this year. I don't realistically know any way this can be reduced by any macro policy. Only economic growth and a reduction in poverty is going to help.

31 in 100000 that seems to be the highest in the universe.

You lot thrive on negative news regarding the country. I don't know why on earth you want to be called South Africans. You proudly called yourself Europeans in the past and I think that label is still 100% accurate today, it should be retained.

Some good news at least.

What good news? In the last 10yrs the figures have not changed much, people are being killed like flies.

And you prefer to stick your head in the sand or wear rose tinted specs.

So you did not give it a moments thought and just took it at face value.

What a bizarre thing to say  I used Occam's razor along with my own anecdotal experience (which seems to be the number #1 go to "evidence" in this thread).
