Article: SA declares war on road accidents

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on South Africans to play a leading role in the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action against Road Deaths to be officially launched world-wide during May 2011.

"There is war on our roads and we must win this war against road deaths... Every municipality, school, church, mosque and temple must ask which 1 000 is going to die on our roads during March? Who is going to be the killer and who is going to be the deceased?

Anyways minister, there are some very easy things to do to stop so many people dying on the roads.

Get the taxi gangsters to maintain their vehicles properly and follow the rules of the road, and come very hard on them if they don't :D

Fix the ****ing potholes. Seriously. Just fix them.

And most importantly. Get. the. ****ing. pedestrians. off. the. highways! :mad:

It's illegal and extremely dangerous for people to walk on or across highways, but I see police cars going past them almost daily without giving a shyte. Same goes for traffic lights.
 
If they were serious about averting the problem they'd get trucks off the roads. Get the old railway transport working again, get rid of trucks.

Have you ever taken a train from JHB to Cape Town? It takes about four days and you're lucky if it doesn't pack it in before it gets there. The damn thing randomly stops on sidings in the middle of nowhere for hours at a time to wait for another train to pass. For the kind of money that would need to be spent on archaic rail infrastructure, you could just about build a fifteen-lane freeway through the Karoo dedicated only to trucks. :p

You know what? Neither you nor me nor the Minister is capable of making these massively complicated economic calculations. Only the market can do that, and the market is the government parasite slug's greatest enemy.
 
From what I can gather, the rail system is in the process of being sorted out, specifically for the reason that we need to get trucks off the roads.

As for the war on road accidents, Minister.. sort out the fekking taxi's and your useless blue-light brigades and I'm almost sure you will halve the accident rate in this country.
 
It has come to a point where even a red light at an intersection means nothing and a green light does not mean go but means wait awhile because some "afrikaans box" is about to jump a red light, we see it almost every day in our area.
 
Want to fix the accidents on the roads, then stop people from driving on them ;). You always going to have accidents due to the mindless acts people do on the roads.
 
Move passengers and freight back to the railways. There are thousands of kms of branch lines sitting underutilized or not used at all.

That's all! Aint going to happen - don't we hear the same every Dec/Easter holidays & then "they" promptly go back to sleep or away on holiday!
 
Although taxis are a problem, truck and bus drivers are also menaces on the road. As are all those people who clearly lack the minimum skill level required to operate a vehicle and those driving unroadworthy vehicles. And how much of the road deaths is actually pedestrians who have been killed by their own stupidity?

There is simply no easy fix for this. Getting the unroadworthy vehicles off the road will require regular testing, which we'll pay for, and undoubtedly bitch about. Removing unroadworthy drivers will likely be an even more monumental task.
 
Maybe if the fat-@rsed, lazy, good-for-nothing traffic orifices spent less time hiding in bushes taking pictures of cars going past, and more time actually doing what they're supposed to, we wouldn't be seeing the carnage that we do on our roads.
What part of "visible policing" don't these ****wads understand?
