Article: SA sex right clarification sought

South Africa will seek clarification from various countries about their laws on sexual orientation, a government official said on Tuesday.

International relations department spokesman Clayson Monyela said government had noted the recent global issues on lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, and intersexuals (LGBTI).

Prelude to our very own anti gay law? Remember our "esteemed leader" has made his feelings on the subject well known.

"South Africa believes that no persons should be subjected to discrimination or violence on any ground, including on the basis of sexual orientation," Monyela said in a statement.

He said the country respected the promotion, protection and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms as a critical pillar of domestic and foreign policies. These were enshrined in the Constitution.

Monyela said government had adopted measures aimed at enhancing protection and putting an end to violence against the LGBTI community. "To this end, our focus will also be on ensuring that acts of violence do not go unpunished and that perpetrators are apprehended, prosecuted, convicted and appropriately sentenced," said Monyela. – Sapa

Oh really? Just like everyone has a right, but some just more than others?

Do you need a shirt with that?

Is there a problem with his statement regarding sexual orientation, problems relating to LGBTI?

Please lets kindly keep the post about the subject. Lets discuss shirts on another thread or you can pm me.

Yes.

That abbreviation is getting ridiculously long...

Indeed

Good thing he clarifies SA's stance on the issue

Our Constitution makes it impermissible to discriminate on the ground of sexual orientation, therefore eradicating hate crimes and intolerance in regard to this matter remains a key preoccupation of the Government,

I don't even know what this thread is about. Non-statements on non-statements.

Knee-jerk reaction to government opening it's mouth. :D Even when they say the right things folks are suspicious.

Although, on the other hand, election time is approaching. Someone in the ANC might have decided that it couldn't hurt to at least try for the pink vote.

Or course we are ..

The ANC has a long history of doing the exact opposite to the right thing. While the world condemns, they support the likes of Mugabe, Gaddafi, Castro. Apart from supporting dictators, they're big buddies with Russia who just passed the same kinda law. Don't even mention protecting criminals & even giving murderers & gun-runners like McBride top gov posts.

So you can bet that when they phone around asking about controversial stuff like sexual discrimination, we expect they're gathering info to do the exact opposite of the right thing.

Didn't our own house of traditional leaders openly condemn 'teh gays' not long ago? Do you recall any govt official speak out in defense? Nah, if you trust them on this issue you either think you're not affected, or simply not paranoid enough.

Anyone who thinks the ANC has their interests at heart is fool.
