Article: SA's entry into BRIC - a cherry on top

South Africa's invitation by BRIC (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China) to join the bloc as a full member will propel the country to new heights.

"It can expect to boost investment and trade opportunities for the country, as it has done for the other four states comprising the informal grouping," says International Marketing Council of South Africa's CEO, Miller Matola.

SA, which got an invitation to join the powerful bloc of emerging economies, had a combined GDP of R18 trillion late in December.

Wrong. Should be about R70 trillion

Like anything, this is a quid pro quo. There are no free lunches. What is SA bringing to the table? Certainly not intellectual offerings or innovation. It can only be the raping and sale of resources – we have nothing else to offer. With China’s insatiable appetite for resources, SA popularity will only last as long as the resources. When the SA legacy is gone so is SA. Fear this.

We offer a gateway into Africa, which is a pretty huge deal. Once India and China get too expensive (and they will), economies will be looking to Africa for cheap labour.

I feel this ‘gateway into Africa’ business is overhyped (besides, there are plenty more ‘gateways into Africa’). India and China have a work ethic. They will be unused to an indolent, entitled, strike-prone workforce with no work ethic. Besides, if SA is anything to go by labour is not all that cheap.

ROFL, if anything SA companies will get labour from china and india, our labour is too damn full of schitt
