Article: Schools are plagued by language problems

Cause an uneducated voter is a ANC voter.

I think it is deeper than that... I see it as more of an oppressive tactic- ensure that the minions remain ignorant, and at the same time ensure that no uprising can occur. Ignorance is a powerful medium when used correctly...

Ahhh... yeah, I don't think this is a big plot to oppress. I just think our government is completely incompetent.

I agree with you on their incompetence, but oppression is the easiest way for them to continue their stay of power. Their actions, and subsequent in-actions, are a lot more thought out than we give them credit for.

Why I call them Mushrooms. I remember just before 1992 my mom one day told me about their generation, she was very angry. She said: We were the mushroom generation, we were kept in the dark and fed BS. But no longer! The (old )government didn't bargain on education being the instrument to their downfall!

Now we have the ANC doing the same thing. History is not taught, so the voter and youth can not see history repeating it self.
They are not taught to read and seek answers
They are not taught math to do simple calculations
They are not taught science so that they can do simple fault finding investigation

They are the next mushroom generation. With out education we are all doomed.

( you can say Verwoerd will be proud of the ANC. They are achieving what he failed at. )

Agreed.

I dunno. Apartheid existed for close to 50 years. It just shows that nothing lasts forever. The ANC would do well to take note of that.

But education was it's downfall. and a minority never oppresses a majority for long. The problem we have is that if the majority is kept uneducated a minority will not change the out come of the country. The only way to shift the power away from the ANC is education. and at the current rate the next available voters that might make a difference is not born yet.

I hope you are right. But will the minority ( all races wait another 30 years? or will they go seek greener pastures?

A study I posted two years ago showed that 50% of all black uni graduates leaves the country.

The anc has no plan on bettering any of it's voters. It only worried about the few slices of pie that is left. The rest of us can go to hell in a handbag for all they care.

My daughters creche and school teach solely in English.
Most of the kids are black, the only time they are allowed to speak a non english language is during breaks.
The parents think it's a good thing.

Are you serious? I hope not. There is a reason why the kids speak a language other then English during breaks! If you should have said this 30 years ago I should have called you RACIST ! Imperialism has many faces. People, young and old, should be helped in the language they prefer and not have things forced upon them ! Especially when they are young and have age related problems when it comes to understanding the world around them. The teachers should make things as easy as possible and not the other way around. English is a very easy language to learn. Teach the basic stuff in whatever language comes easiest for the child and have him learn English in the high school for later studies.

It is not practical to teach in all official languages. We should decide to accept one language as the official language - English. My first language is Afrikaans, yet I had to adopt English in order to further my studies.

I blame apartheid. The fact that some old people know Afrikaans better is just sad really. WTH are you going to do with it?Apartheid government shouldnt have forced Afrikaans on people. I am probably the only black person who has no intention of teaching his kids his home language. If they learn it as a second language then good, il also encourage that but english should be a priority. I have seen people who struggle to understand questions in grade 12 and you just know that this person is not going to varsity no matter how smart he might be.

Forum was horribly slow for a while...

Not sure if you saw this: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...s-hypocrisy-with-Eastern-Cape-school-closures

And you are already aware of the "bees in the jam" debacle... Tactical ignorance I tell ya...

Whilst a factor, it is a very small one. Inadequate education remains many years after apartheid was abolished, regardless of the home language of the student.

I agree with you assertion.

Jip. and that is why they rebelled. And it's been 20 years and now kids can't read or write.. never mind which language. At least those old people had some sort of skill. Afrikaans is the 3rd largest language in SA so you would have been able to understand a big part of the country. Remember apartheid said that you can learn any language you want but they will only subsidize and supply Afrikaans books. So If you were lucky and went to a convent you were taught in english. So All government schools were Afrikaans.
So if their stupid idea succeeded these old people would have been better of than people with just Xhosa. ( just a thought.)
See that is what the British tried to do to them, they decided no that they will write read teach in afrikaans. So they in their wisdom decided to do the same.

I still feel that a home language in grade 1 - 4 is important. You need your basis to be in a language you are familiar with. I was lucky to understand english from an early age. But imagine a kiddy in the northern Cape. They have been talking afrikaans and Setswana. Now you get to school and everything is english. It's not fair on a child.

Sadly, it is much easier for Afrikaans children to learn English then it is for African kids. Further, the English words are fairly difficult to pronounce correctly as opposed to the Afrikaans ones. People write English fairly good but if they open their mouths . . . OMG The most important issue though, is the availability of teachers. While Afrikaans has a decent number of qualified teachers, in English most teachers are having themselves difficulty with the language. And this is not going to improve even if 100% of the SA's population "becomes" English overnight. It came to my attention that in South Africa even so called English speaking families are not really English. A language is much more then a medium of communication. However, the majority of South Africans do not understand this simple fact.

My parents always said that the best gift that you can give a child is to teach him more languages. They taught me 3 at home and I learned an extra one. In a multicultural world, you're not going to be competitive if you know only 1 or 2 language.

Where in the past "Good Morning Sir" or Ma'am was the most common phrase heard, nowadays it's "Jou ma se p..s". At least in the WC.

Not really. If you are good at your job and have a good profession and only speak English you will find a job in all the English speaking countries, all of continental Europe, Russia, Middle East, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, PRC, India, most of South America and most of Africa.

This is what happens when you make the 11 languages official, when parents are pushing their kids into English schools to get a better education.

In other countries they couldn't give a sh/t about English but at least the education is good.
