Article: Sex addiction not real: study

Lol. Either way, I don't think the type of person you mentioned has an addiction to sex itself. That person might just have a very strong psychological need for intimacy which they fulfill through sex, but it's not an addiction to sex.

I know someone like this who claims to be addicted to sex, when in reality all she really wants is the intimacy and to feel wanted by someone.

So somebody who claims to be an alcoholic and gets wasted at parties now negates a person who wakes up every day to a glass of alcohol? There are different circumstances and different issues.

I do not crave intimacy and i'm a sexual addict

No such thing as sex addiction. I can stop whenever i want...

I do not crave intimacy and i'm a sexual addict

I was a raging alcoholic, been clean for 14 years this month.

Same as you STS, I don't crave and neither do I like intimacy, I just need the rush.

You like it a lot. You're not addicted. I would also like to have sex every chance I get, if I had the opportunity. I'm not addicted either.

And I don't know what your whole alcoholic rant has to do with anything. Last I checked, we were discussing sex, not substance abuse.

You cannot relate to me because you are not me. I like Monster Energy drinks a lot. I love playing mafia online a lot. I also love spending time with my son a lot. But not matter how ashamed I am of my pornography and sex acts, no matter how many times i try to stop, i cannot. I haven't had sex for months but I am still obsessed with it.

That is like telling a homosexual that he isn't really gay, he just prefers guys to girls. Everyone's psychology is different

Was not a rant, I was simply comparing one addiction to another.

You guys are confusing addictions to necessities, needs and wants.

Food is a necessity and you eat as much as required, your body will tell you it needs food. Most people eat too much but not through addiction.
Alcohol and other substances including caffeine have chemical affects to varying degrees on different people that cause withdrawal symptoms etc that cause cravings.
Sex may be a biological necessity subconciously to procreate the species, but it is not critical to your own life in the way food and water is. Your enjoyment level is what drives you to 'want' more, but it is not an addiction nor a necessity to do it more than once in a while.
...besides they can always go jack themselves off.

In my case it is a craving, I definitely don't don't do it to procreate.

i think all you can suggest is that we're confusing addiction and obsession, hat is as far as i'm willing to admit. people sometimes have no choice in their obsessions/addictions. just because chemicals make people more prone to addiction does not negate behaviours and risks/rewards in psychology.

if a person has subconsciously associated sex with feeling good, they will not feel good until they've had sex. for you and me it's fine to go and masturbate but how many people are pathetically sad if they don't get to watch their rugby game, get to eat their favourite food, perform their normal ritual or perform their habit?

some people are more flexible than others, and some people make up for it in other areas. while some people don't need sex as badly as i do, i'm not nearly as judgemental or troubled if i am inconvenienced as most other people are because my desires, ideals and needs lie elsewhere

Try fasting. If you can fast by not eating food for a week or so and still have sexual cravings then I would say you might have a problem. But if during the fast your sexual desires disappears completely, then you might just have a problem of lack of self-control and lack of ability to focus your mind and desires away from sexual impulses (when you're not fasting).

Ps. If you are gonna do the fast then abstain from porn also. It is a test to see how your body responds. But consult a doctor before you undertake the fast (if you have to).

I don't think anybody ever saw sex addiction as a biological or physical addiction like heroin addiction or alcoholism.
It's a psychological addiction based on shame and compulsion - a womean who feels compelled to seek out strangers for sex and then feels deeply ashamed afterwards, for example, but feels she has no control over herself.
It's a conceptual model about people who try to resist engaging in acts of sex, who really want to stop their behaviour, but are unable to do so, who spend so much time getting or looking for sex, to the extent that they are unable to fulfill their other life obligations, to the extent where they can't focus on work, spend all their money on it, etc. If a person is anxious and ashamed about this behaviour but can't stop and the behaviour continues to get more frequesnt and risky, despite attempts to stop.
It's a psychological compulsion, not a physical addiction.
