I am a non-smoker and generally don't have a gripe with smokers. I believe the fact that we have smoking areas in restaurants these days are adequate. I do agree on the smoking at the entrance situation. What annoys me more than the smoke is the attitude of entitlement THOSE smokers show towards everyone else. Instead of just walking 5 meters away and smoking there where I am not forced to walk through, they just casually puff along right in the entrance. So it is the arrogance that gets to me.
Unfortunately SOME smokers just behave like idiots (similar to SOME non-smokers, SOME drivers, SOME drinkers, SOME people queuing in a line, SOME *sses ast work etc). You have to accept that you have an irritating habit (regardless on which level) and will always be met with the same resistance as someone that bangs a loud drum all through the night in a complex or someone that sits in a pool and splashes water on everyone that walks past. Fact is you choose to smoke, it is a disgusting habit and if you disagree on that, you are delusional, but to each their own and I don't judge you for it. I can guarantee you no one walks past a smoker and cares for their health or well being, but they do get upset if your habit gets in their face in a 'spiteful' manner.
Most of my friends smoke, but they are considerate and are always willing to sit in the non-smoking section if I am with them. Because of that, I have always elected to sit in the smoking section with them because firstly, they outnumber me and secondly because they generally make an effort to not be arrogant and entitled so I never have a problem of giving them their way.
We can't outlaw smokers EVERYWHERE for heavens sake!!! But both smokers and non-smokers have to be a little more thoughtful and considerate of each other and if someone unintentionally misses a step somewhere, everyone shouldn't immediately jump on their horses but this has to come from both sides.
