Article: Speeding Free State MEC sentenced

You don't by accident go over 200kmph. Should've suspended the licence at LEAST. What's the salary of a MEC like? R20k is probably pocket change.

A suspended sentence means you dont even pay the fine.

I am all for justice but who has gone to jail for speeding in the last 15 years? Perhaps i missed the peeps who have done hard time for speeding so you could always link me to the story.

Just because no fine has been set does not mean you automatically go to jail.

You obviously didn't read my previous post. A chap was given 3 years on the South Coast in October, for doing 195.

As for the ANC....this guy is a member of the EXECUTIVE Committee of the ANC. It has plenty to do with it.

If the man wasn't on government or ANC business what he does in his free time is his business. Didn't DJ Sbu get fined only R7000 for doing similar speeds a while ago? The fine is fair.

You obviously have no concept of accountability.

A PUBLIC figure and a high ranking politician should not get away with it, whether he was on holiday or driving lead car in a blue light brigade!
 
According to IOL, and other reports, he was ordered to immediately pay R15k, while the R5k balance was suspended for 5 years/3 months.

Free State arts and culture MEC Dan Kgothule was handed a R20 000 fine or 12 months in prison for speeding in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said he was ordered to pay R15 000 of the fine immediately. The remaining R5000 or three months of the prison sentence were suspended for five years.

Kgothule’s driving licence was not revoked on condition that he did not repeat the offence during that time.

Mhaga said: “We consider the sentence appropriate under the circumstances.”

Kgothule was caught driving at 235km/h in the Glen, outside Bloemfontein, the highest speed recorded nationally over the festive season. He apologised to the court for his conduct.

SABC news reported premier Ace Magashule as saying he was happy that the law had taken its course.

His spokesman, William Bulwane, said there was no need for further action against the MEC.

Bulwane said: “Now that he has apologised, accepted his mistakes, why should we punish him further?”

“I don't think it's important that the MEC should be removed from his position because of what he has done, taking into consideration the public apology he has done himself. I don't think it's wise.” - Sapa

So, basically, he got off with a warning: Young man, if you do this again, you will have to pay at least 20K and I will smack your bun buns heavily.

If I was doing 15km/h over the speed limit and caught and ended up in court, I would have to pay, and then also have to pay court fee's.
This bastid gets to go home having paid nothing?

Agreed, but this was in response to the previous poster's comment that civil servants should be punished harsher.

That is my point though, why do you guys want him punished more than some random speeder? Do you have a link for the guy who went to jail? Was he busted for drink driving while speeding?

Dave you guys are acting like drama queens, i cannot recall hearing all of this when lolly was nailed for instance. It just looks like people want the law to be much harsher because he is an anc member which looks terrible in my opinion considering most want the laws to apply to everyone equally. He was caught speeding, got a fine of 15k. To me that sounds about normal and how it goes down day to day.

This is a HUGE let-off! Bastard should have had his licence revoked and spend a few weeks in jail... Stupid mec!
 
You can be forgiven in this instance, as it wasn't mentioned in the OP's link.
I just remembered reading about the sentence in another article.
