Article: Speeding Free State MEC sentenced

The Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court has fined Free State arts and culture MEC Dan Kgothule R20,000 or 12 months in prison for speeding, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Wednesday.

The sentence was suspended for five years and Kgothule's driver's licence was not revoked on condition that he did not repeat the same offence during the suspended time, spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said.

Its pretty similar fine to the one Lolly Jackson got... I see no issue with it. They must just ensure he pays it with his own cash ;)

In comparison to the other sentences dished out for this type of thing, its comparable.

I am still of the opinion that as a public servant the punishment should have been harsher though.

This man has paid nothing.

So, basically, he got off with a warning: Young man, if you do this again, you will have to pay at least 20K and I will smack your bun buns heavily.

If I was doing 15km/h over the speed limit and caught and ended up in court, I would have to pay, and then also have to pay court fee's.
This bastid gets to go home having paid nothing?

Am I missing something here?

"I don't think its important that the MEC should be removed from his position because of what he has done, taking into consideration the public apology he has done himself. I don't think its wise."
I apologise right now, in public, for not paying TAX again, ever.

It would have been fair if the sentence had not been suspended, the fine was larger (on a per km/h basis) and his license had been revoked. This is just a whitewash. I am interested to see what the ANC has to say about the issue, as far as I am concerned he should be fired.

What does the anc have to do with this? Do people who normally do this go to jail and have their license suspended? I doubt it. 20k is a hefty fine and i am sure this is about the norm for speeding. Bunch of drama queens hahah.

4513 Operated a vehicle at a speed of 160+ km/h which is in excess of the general speed limit of 120 km/h which is applicable to a freeway - Sect. 59(4)(a) O 0 6

NB: If the fine value is 0 and the I/O reads "O" then this is a criminal offence and no fine has been set for this offence. It requires a court appearance. Typically sentences and fines set by a magistrates for these offences will also carry a criminal record if you are found, plead or admit to being guilty of this offence. Magistrates may also sentence offenders to a jail term, correctional supervision etc.

it is a criminal offence. :)

Yup all speeding is criminal yet i have never heard of anyone spending time in jail for overdoing it. Sounds to me like a grudge more than right or wrong.

I am all for justice but who has gone to jail for speeding in the last 15 years? Perhaps i missed the peeps who have done hard time for speeding so you could always link me to the story.

Just because no fine has been set does not mean you automatically go to jail.

'twas but a rap on the knuckles, as I expected.

they should adjust the fine to cater for salary earnings - thus the richer will get hit harder with higher fines.
