Article: Stop using language which marginalises people: ANC's Duarte

South Africans must change their language on issues of racism in order to create a non-racial society, ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte said on Tuesday.

She told a discussion session in Johannesburg that the African National Congress should reject the use of language which marginalises people.

"I'm sorry but I am not a minority. I am a South African black woman. And I am a South African citizen and very proud to be that," Duarte told the discussion held by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

*yawn*

Jesse you stupid cow, nobody actually cares what you say until you sort out your boss and stop him being a corrupt, womanising racist prick.

Maybe it's too early but, I honestly don't know wtf Duarte is on about. Is she complaining that she feels marginalised within the ANC?

Yes...

Everyone must type in Welsh...

Henceforth it is the only language of any importance to me, and since I am an African South African you must all listen to me.

How on earth can a Black Female be a minority group any way? they make up the 2nd largest group of our populace....

Her message is ambiguous and unclear... If she means that we should not class a South African by race or gender, then I'm all with that... Treat all South Africans as equal citizens.

Jesse seems to be confusing 'African' with 'Black'. Irony much?

It's standard practice in the ANC/government. And it's spreading, even on these forums there are people telling me I'm not African because I'm white.

Well I guess that disqualifies much of the super-sahan part of the continent as well. Nothing changes. Refer to my signature.

The ANC commissions annual stats seemingly about "internal transformation". It reflected badly this year, so instead of sweeping it under the carpet, Duarte gets hold of it and decides to soapbox with it. Her motives are unclear. Maybe she's trying to outmaneuver a competitor or secure her current position. Or maybe she's really concerned about the issues. Who knows. Politicians should get column inches for what they do, not what they say.

This is Duarte.. she isn't concerned about anything other than her lavish lifestyle...

For someone trying so hard to not “marginalise” people she’s not doing a very good job. Hammering on language use is totally missing the point and only enforcing a toxic political correctness that achieves nothing.

In essence, how is referring to a black person as “African” and a white person as “non-African” any different from the historic status quo? For the same effort why not call white people “black” and black people “white”? Nett difference: 0.

If we continue classifying people and sorting them into convenient groups then it really does not matter what we actually ‘say’. We need to change our mindset and not our language.

Misplaced effort on Duarte’s part.

I am so confused, I do not understand what she is saying.

Language should not be used to marginalise people, she says. Why then do they insist that African only refers to black people and not white? That in itself is marginalisation.
