"I'm sorry but I am not a minority. I am a South African black woman.
"People feel that non-African South Africans make no effort to learn another South African language."

The ANC commissions annual stats seemingly about "internal transformation". It reflected badly this year, so instead of sweeping it under the carpet, Duarte gets hold of it and decides to soapbox with it. Her motives are unclear. Maybe she's trying to outmaneuver a competitor or secure her current position. Or maybe she's really concerned about the issues. Who knows. Politicians should get column inches for what they do, not what they say.
South Africans must change their language on issues of racism in order to create a non-racial society, ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte said on Tuesday.
She told a discussion session in Johannesburg that the African National Congress should reject the use of language which marginalises people.
"I'm sorry but I am not a minority. I am a South African black woman. And I am a South African citizen and very proud to be that," Duarte told the discussion held by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
