Twenty eight people -- including a number of children and infants -- were killed when the minibus they were travelling in collided head on with a truck on the N3 just outside Harrismith early Saturday morning, paramedics said.

And counting. 30 at the moment.

There were 35 people in the taxi. 10 children. Add luggage and this suicide weapon is at double it's capacity.
Why?, why? do the passengers enter?

These taxi's are a law unto themselves. Please don't ask of me to pity them.
They do what they want, when and how they want with total disregard to the safety of others. And it seems to themselves.
Laws and rules of the road are for other people. They disregard it completely. They need to make a extra buck!

This and similar incidents I consider as payback for their behavior. Should they adhered to the rules this would never have happened. I will bet my bottom dollar there are going to be numerous more of these incidents before the end of the month.
Payback indeed.

My pity and condolences goes to the people on the truck who died.
If was not for this imbecile taxi driver they would still have been alive.

I hope this driver find a place in hell to spend the extra cash he made.

It amazes me how little these taxi drivers are held responsible for... I blame law enforcement - they are weak and corrupt.

This is why I haven't rode in a minibus in a year. Those things are not safe at all, the drivers speed and over-pack the damn bus, half the time the seat-belts don't work or they are simply missing.

I feel for people that have to ride those things, they are the worst.

Taxi drivers who are pulled over and their vehicles found to be overloaded should be jailed immediately and their vehicles confiscated.

That is... if you have a functioning metro police force who are actually interested in enforcing the law.

this entire taxi industry needs to fold.
Its a culture among them to make it as unsafe and as possible for all motorists and passengers.

Sad and regretfully but this country full, this WORLD full...

Condolences to their families. As it has been mentioned, blatant disregard for rules of the road must be punished severely. Why do the marshals clear a taxi for the road if they know it's not safe? I think every long haul taxi should be certified my a metro cop before leaving taxi rank exit.

And why must it always be mention how much of chilkdren and babies died?

And why must it always be mention how much of chilkdren and babies died?

Because those kids were packed into that sardine can taxi by their idiotic parents who should have known better than to get into a overloaded taxi. The kids would not have had any choice. So they die along with adults.
Why can't the idiots tell the driver not to allow anymore people on once it's full. Are they scared of the driver? Why? There's 20 odd passengers only one driver.

I know that but why are there lives always made out to be more valuble.

all for a few rands more in taxi fair... people should really be more educated about the responsibility of driving and being driven in any vehicle. it is after all a very dangerous form of transport.

I know that but why are there lives always made out to be more valuble.

Because society deems kids to be precious. They have their whole lives ahead of them. Many of them might become doctors or scientists or movie stars and benefit us all in some way. Yeah, right!
I don't beleive any of this crap I'm telling you! I think many of them will become criminals or hookers or drug addicts or politicians. You only need a Standard 6 to become president of this country.
It's just that society seems to think that kids lives are more valuable than others so it always gets pointed out when some of them get wiped out.

I know the taxi's should not be loading 37 passengers however the passengers are also to blame here why on earth would you get into a taxi when it's already full?
