Article: Teachers in SA can't teach: report

Pupils are not taught to think, to solve problems or to read independently because most of their teachers do not know how to teach these skills, it was reported on Monday.

The first national evaluation of how pupils in Grades One, Two and Three are taught showed that teaching was poor, that children's ability to read was weak, and that they were likely to struggle for the rest of their lives, The Times reported.

I am not sure that even skilled teachers can teach those types of skills to a class of 50. How on earth can you give any kind of one to one skill lesson to each of them? :wtf:

So education has not changed much since the 80's
 
My wife teaches and I wish she was my teacher when I was at school. She truly does it for the love of the job and the children. Not all teachers are scum, mostly those that only do it because they were forced to study something.

Also, schools expect too much from their teachers, long nights with parent evenings, weekends with sports, camps etc.

Point in case....................

My daughter was in a semi gov school marks were 40-50% moved her to a pvt school and the very next term her marks started improving. That was 2yrs ago now she is getting 75%+.

The question is:
Do the gov/semi gov teachers have the ability, qualifications and want to teach or is it just a job created by BEE.

The teachers at my daughters school are all very very passionate about their work, pupils and learners.

I personally think most things controlled by the government have gone the same way -fast downward spiral.

No one cares. Teachers get school holidays and more holidays than any other profession. Honestly, no one cares when they also have to work overtime :D

You make it sound as if education was something that was 'taken away' from them. Yeah it might have only been bantu education but it was something they were given that they didn't have before.

Also, why did some excel and went on to professional careers (even under hostile apartheid) while others didn't? 'Cos they're just people like the rest of us, those that choose to step up, do, the others don't. Or are you saying they're some conglomerous group that need to be treated different 'cos they have a different skin color?

Really Mandela studied under Bantu Education, its been in the country for over 8 generations.

Teachers dont get paid overtime
 
Teachers should also be constantly evaluated and tested on the subjects they teach. Every 2 years or so they should have to write a test to evaluate their knowledge and teaching skills.

While I do agree bantu education is the root, the current generation of new teachers is under the anc government who have instead of fixing the problem worsened the problem. Outcomes based education lol never worked anywhere else in the world but maybe here it will. Teaching in african language( lol i'm black and do you know how hard it is to translate concepts from maths [algerbra, geometry], science into an african language not only that but into several. Even zimbabwe with it's 99% black population uses english as the language of education). Some of this is due to closing of teaching schools
