I hope you are not serious with your retarded comment. What is wrong with "African languages"? I would like it if all people speak an European language (actually suits me more then just fine :D ) but would the Africans be ok with that? Did the old SA government not try to implement this very "forced transition"? Verwoerd is laughing in his grave right now. In your opinion his idea was right.

I think this should be applied to all professions. Don't pass the test---> Pay cut etc etc.

The bantu education act was designed to not teach organizational and management skills so that black people couldn't organize themselves against the whites. We are reaping what we sowed

This is a typical week for my wife who teaches grade 11 and 12.

School by 7:15am, teaches until 2:00, then on Monday, Wednesday and Friday she has extra classes for the grade 12's from 2-3:15. On Tuesday and Thursday she HAS to do Netbal, practice days last till 3:30. Match days she might get home by 6pm.
She will come home, play with our son for an hour to an hour 1/2 then eat. We put son to bed, then she starts marking and compiling worksheets and test till around 11:30pm.

On Saturday's and Sundays after son goes to bed, she continues working on marks and worksheets and tests.

Of course this does not include nights like Parent's evening, Prize giving, school concerts etc that she must attend. Oh and departmental meetings that she must attend once a month.

Yes, she does get school holidays but pretty much every holiday now has a mandatory CAPS training which all teachers must attend, the training last 3-4 days. Most high school teachers spend their holidays marking exams.

Im lucky if I finish my workload by 9pm. :/ I understand teachers work hard and I wont take that away from them... but they get 3 months holiday a year (minus some days for CAPS training as you put it.)

My wife has trained doctors and I used to help her with marking, so I know how much the marking sucks.

Just BTW, I'm in a Governing Body position. I don't get a government salary ... far less.

I really have no idea what teachers get paid though? As a starter I'm guessing 8-14k?
 
Who doesn't know this already? most of the teachers from my school where products of bantu education and the stupid old system which allowed people to go to college and study teaching after passing grade 10. This is why things like AA and BEE exist. You cant have a system where everyone is judged equally irrespective of the challenges they have to overcome. its unfair.

People who are blaming ANC here needs to think again. This is a problem caused by the apartheid government and majority of white people who kept them in power. Almost all of you here dont know how it feels like for a kid of 8 to go to school on a cold winter without shoes. How much attention is he going to pay in class? If he didnt understand a thing in school, he cant ask his mother because his mother is even worse off in terms of knowledge and his father is working in an asbestos mine 400k away from home.

As much as i hate what ANC is doing now, the grants were necessary. It might not help when the parent is just negligent but it does help in most cases.
Feel free to disagree here but the past 4 terms have been the best south africa has ever been.

Yes, for some teaching is a vocation. Unfortunately for many others it is a vacation.

Oh no theres nothing wrong with my mother tongue but the limitations of it is very accute. Art, history, accounting, biology, geography can be easily translated but you must realise that zulu spoken in rural area's of KZN isn't the same that i generally spoken in urban areas.My friends grandfather was up here in joburg for a wedding and understanding him was quite difficult. Now if zulu has this problem think about venda and Shangan. When it was implemented government thought it was a panacea as a reason why blacks students aren't passing those subjects instead of fixing the root cause which is poor educators, outdated or non-existent infrastructure and poor implementation. Maybe i a few years it can change but right now with education and educated people are a scarce commodity we can ill afford to mess around with.

Teacher gives the kid a project that only a parent can handle.
Parent practically does it single handedly
Teacher gives pupil an A for a brilliant "effort" and proceeds to pat himself on the back for excellent teaching.
Kid gets lazy which results in low marks.

Teacher blames education dept.

Its a mess.

teach a premium subject and earn accordingly, schools pay top $ for quality teachers in maths, science and english - the rest blah
