Article: Two FHM Writers Fired

But i'm just asking should one be able to make drug jokes, murder jokes, or racism jokes on facebook?

Or are you suggesting we should be fearful for making any of these type of jokes otherwise we risk losing our careers?

I have SEEN first hand how people sank they jobs with comments on fb (won't go into detail). DON'T make jokes about murder/rape/racism on fb, if you value your job.

Ah okay so no jokes about
Rape
Murder
Racism

Ok lets see here, what do we have left? suicide, abuse and retardation: okay or not okay?

Dude.. I don't make the rules. I have only told you what I have witnessed first hand (a few times) in the past. If you feel comfortable to make Rape/Murder/Racism jokes on fb.. do it. If it comes back to bite you, then you have been warned.

Well surely if you can lose your job over a joke, it is important for everyone here to know what jokes should get you fired, and what jokes should not?

If you need someone to tell you which jokes are inappropriate in which contexts, then you've got bigger issues.

Two journalists for a male entertainment magazine made wildly inappropriate jokes, spoke condescendingly towards people who called them out on it, then made an extremely condescending 'apology' post on their blog, then got fired for the whole fiasco.

That's life. Life sucks. Deal with it.

It's not about the joke. It's really about "Can your company fire your for something said privately". The answer should be no.

The answer should be yes. Employees have too much protection these days. CCMA are the 3 most overused letters.

I disagree, as soon as you give the power to the companies to decide what is "fire because of these comments" you'll see a very quick abuse of a power (particularly in the political landscape)

What it SHOULD be about is the thousands of women who are raped every year in South Africa.
What it SHOULD be about is the women who are "correctively raped".

but nobody wants it to be about that... that's just awkward.

And what about the hit to this company's reputation? All these people who were so outraged, do you think they would be content if a company, in the face of such contempt for the actions of two of their writers, did absolutely nothing?

Like it or not, these clowns probably signed a contract saying they wouldn't bring the FHM brand into disrepute. Their conduct in this matter definitely triggers that clause.

And you're right. It's not just about the joke. It's also about the way they handled the fallout from the joke. Any normal person would either have left it at that, or apologized and moved on. These clowns not only kept going on about it, they actually mocked the people expressing discontent. You can't claim unfairness when you brought your own rope and tied your own noose. If you have a 'private' Facebook profile with 800 people on,most of whom you likely don't know, then I'm sorry to say, that profile is no longer considered private. No matter what your privacy settings are.

So, to all the sarcasm and comedy void thinly veiled moral crusaders on here... will it be OK if I drop names and/or posts relating to content from people like, say, Jimmy Carr and George Carlin on my social networks? Both people who's careers are basically built on the idea of joking about some of mankind's worst built-in tendencies... they make the FHM jokes look like compliments and surely promoting their material means I accept and (this is important) ACT OUT on the things they joke about?

Hell, if we're really THAT serious about our rape/violence epidemic we should immediately confiscate and destroy all public accessible media that's related to joking about these and other serious issues.

It's hard to come to terms with the idea that there's so many lilly bellied losers out there who actually believe that mere words should be physically acted upon with such vitriol stemming from a supposed "moral compass" that's so weak at the knees it can barely lick the arsehole of these "companies" whose "image" we're supposed to protect.

So to FHM, I've never really cared about reading any of your stuff but just remember that this thing goes both ways.
You might have given the self indulgent and misdirected morality dipped ****ers a reason to STFU (for a little while at least) until the next person dares post something that loosely relates to a controversial issue they -who lose their crap over it- do f-all about anyway.

The rest of us out there who doesn't give a crap about mind-policing will now know that if you ever had any credibility as a thought provoking, controversial and cutting edge magazine, well, it's all been flushed down the drain now.... and as we all know, "they all float down there"

So where does this thing leave us now?

1. We're still exactly where we were regarding the issues in this country concernding rape etc.
2. We've got two new jobless people out there, and they'll probably stay that way given how this ridiculous outburst has tainted them.
3. We've collectively shown that it's OK for "companies" to subjectively decide whether our personal conduct (actually, not even conduct, just WORDS), whether it be public, semi-public or hell, leaked from our private lives are too "tainty" for their image... and that it's all just dandy, I mean that over used meaningless ****ing word "disrepute" sums it all up perfectly now, doesn't it?
4. We've collectively shown that mere words (I'm not even getting into the sarcasm/joke part) in a social context from people who have zero political power are in fact approaching the seriousness of the actual action associated with it.

But hey, this is OK right?!?
I mean, the 'Muricans are doing it and when so many people feel so strong about something we should just roll with it?! :erm:

So congratulations everyone *clap* *clap* *clap*.... just remember, next time Zapiro or someone uses rape or violence or whatever in a joke in the public space we should all lose our **** again, or, is that OK because sarcasm, "bad taste" jokes or satire should only be left to the professionals for now, and when they finally die we should ban it all together? Hopefully then these poor beloved companies and economic entities won't die of public interest starvation as people bore their politically correct little lives to death.

Foeitog.

Well, then lets fire any government employee that (public OR privately) criticizes Zuma (Governments reputation is hit if you do that). I'd rather not have that.

Perhaps, but I don't see how the comment were very linked to FHM. They were private on personal facbooks. FHM was (as far as i can tell?) never mentioned in that joke line.

Yes, now this I can agree with. The apology was a public statement and they should feel the burn for it. A normal person would delete the comment and moved on (and perhaps apologizing to the few private friends offended by it, but I put that beyond these guys)

Carlin has a "Rape can be funny" skit...

"It all depends on how you construct the joke. What the
exaggeration is. What the exaggeration is.
Because every joke needs one exaggeration. Every joke
needs one thing to be way out of proportion."

I think that means you can't say "FHM lies about all it's articles" or "FHM is for losers" - I don't think the contract stipulates that you will be fired if you make a single crude joke on your own facebook.
Again, just because they work for FHM and have a bunch of friends, doesn't mean FHM endorses what they post on their own personal facebook pages.

It's a bad joke, that doesn't reference FHM in any way, that was posted on a personal facebook page.
FHM said it themselves "These comments in no way reflect FHM's values".

So if it doesn't reflect FHM's values, what's the issue? That the person expressed his own values?

We don't approve of rape either, but if you think it's okay to get fired for making a stupid joke on facebook you are promoting an idea that will become a very slippery slope.
