Article: Two FHM Writers Fired

Again,

Planes flying into buildings IS A REAL THING. raping/sterlizing people who dance a certain way, is not.

You mean like women who dance with other women that become victims of corrective rape.

Again,

Planes flying into buildings IS A REAL THING. raping/sterlizing people who dance a certain way, is not.

Maybe you should go read up on corrective rape. It's a lot more real then you seem to realise. It's a homophobic hate-crime intended to 'cure' people of homosexuality.

It helps when you actually understand the concepts you're arguing about.

Again, I'm not saying rape or sterilization aren't real
I'm saying "a law to get people raped and sterilized for twerking" isn't real.

Do you guys understand the difference?

A Pilot making a joke about flying into buildings has 2 problems
Problem 1: This happens, it's called terrorism.
Problem 2: This person has constant access to planes.

People don't get sterilized or raped because they twerk.

The goal is censorship. The intent is to shut other people up.

What are you saying. That we should shut up and not say anything when we're offended? That even though their comments pissed us off we should just keep it to ourselves because to criticise is to censor?

This is pathetic. I have lost count of the amount of over the top conversations I have come across on FB and various internet forums.

Back to FB though, folks should be very careful about what they put up on there, both comments and pics.

People are defending this still? How many examples do we need push to show that you can't take action in these cases over a private facebook message.

As a government employee you post on your private facebook wall "This government isn't performing well, I'v voting DA". This offends the bosses of your employer (government AKA ANC) and made them look bad.

How about posting something like "Zuma sucks" - They brought the government into a bad light, they are fired.

I'm amused that you people think getting fired over making ONE SINGLE JOKE, is okay.
I hope none of you guys get hacked, because a few "bad words" on your facebook profile = no job, possibly lose your car/home/etc

I agree that it was tasteless, guys, we all know rape is a problem in SA - but these guys didn't rape anybody, they just posted a bad joke on a facebook page. that's it guys, that's it.

Put yourself in their shoes - imagine your friend said "Man Vodacom raped me this month, my account is over R3000!" to which you reply "time to apply the vaseline lol".
Now imagine your boss sees you taking rape so lightly...a joke about rape?! WOW, HOW COULD YOU? How could you take rape lightly? Not Cool man, not Cool.........
.......you're fired.

Yeah, losing your job over a single facebook post - seems legit.

it is NOT a joke. RAPE IS NOT A JOKE!!!!! whether it's in a joke form or not. whether it's in a private conversation or not!!!! they were not talking about vodacom raping them and you know it!!

Correct, rape is not a joke. A joke about rape is though.

That wasn't a joke about rape.

This is a joke about rape (and drunk driving):
"I do the following joke live when talking about the perils of drink-driving, 'I've done it once and I'm really ashamed of it. It was Christmas - I'd had a couple of drinks and I took the car out. But I learned my lesson. I nearly killed an old lady. In the end I didn't kill her. In the end, I just raped her'. - Ricky Gervais

The rape problem in south africa will never go away until some people stop treating it like a joke.

Who said rape is a joke?

If I said "Anyone who Twerks should be smacked with a baseball bat", does that mean I think women abuse is a joke? Does that mean I promote women abuse?
Should I get fired because women get abused in South Africa?
People make Chris Brown jokes every day, including the media - that doesn't mean they think women abuse is "okay".

A joke is something not to be taken seriously.
It's very definition notes being facetious (Treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant)

People make fun of bad things all the time (necrophilia, murder, abuse, drugs, suicide, adultery, slavery, racism, retardation, etc)
That doesn't mean you promote it, or that you think it's okay - that just makes your jokes crude and lowbrow.

Am I making any sense here or do people still not understand what a joke is?

What I have learned many moons ago... DON'T post stuff like this on facebook/twitter/x/y/z , anything that might get you in trouble, even in personal capacity. Life is unfair, they made the joke.. they got fired.

You want to make some rape jokes? ... do it when your buddy is next to you. Not in emails, on the web etc....

Got it. No rape jokes.

How about drug jokes, murder jokes, or racism jokes?

Just want to take the risk ? Do it on fb/twitter.

Like I said.. life is unfair. You work today, tomorrow you get retrenched even though you worked hard never took a day leave. You make silly rape/racism jokes on fb.... you get the boot.

I just don't understand what point you're trying to make? People didn't like what was said, it was offensive and insensitive and people used their freedom of expression to condemn it. That's how it is. You think people should be allowed to say what they want, well, they are allowed to say what they want and what they've said is "we are not amused". There is not much you can do about it, whether you like it or not

But i'm just asking should one be able to make drug jokes, murder jokes, or racism jokes on facebook?

Or are you suggesting we should be fearful for making any of these type of jokes otherwise we risk losing our careers?

Well surely if you can lose your job over a joke, it is important for everyone here to know what jokes should get you fired, and what jokes should not?
