Three train carriages were set alight in Mlamlankunzi railway station on Wednesday night in Orlando East, Soweto, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"It is a deliberate fire, it was not by accident," spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

The carriages were torched while the train was in motion.

Mulaudzi said no one was hurt and fire-fighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

On Tuesday night, three carriages were also set on fire at the Merafe railway station in Soweto. No injuries were reported as a result.

"The carriages were totally, totally burnt out. It looks like they were set alight."
It appeared that a commuter was responsible for the fire, Mulaudzi said.

Investment in education is finally paying off. They used to burn Metrorail because of horrible service which made things worse. Now they are at least not crippling the preferred way of transport. The one sentiment I agree with is that the metropolitan cities lack a concept of an all-inclusive monthly transport plan with daily/weekly/monthly prices - similar to what you see in London/NYC or any other European city.

The government, with their tendency of only listening when they confronted with violence makes people say things like burning the gautrain.
