ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema vowed again on Sunday to "take land without payment" at the closing ceremony of his organisation's elective conference in Midrand. "There is no way you can be diplomatic about the issue of land. We will never be diplomatic about willing buyer, willing seller. It has failed," Malema told delegates.
As I've said before, Malema is the quintessential demagogic cliche. He's useful because once the ANC toss him into the volcano they'll say: "See? Could've been a lot worse. Be thankful you're just stuck with us nascent kleptocrats!"
Malema's suggestion is too radical. The ANC must move now and accelerate the land issue before Malema uses it to gain popularity in the ANC mother body and in turn become SA president. 5% land distributed to blacks instead of 30% is lousy, the ANC have failed dismally. It's not only about land redistribution but also about developing the skills to farm those lands, and that's not happening. I blame the ANC and to a lesser extent the farmers. Even though the farmers are feeding the nation, they must realize that holding on to land and not willing to sell to the government now (because we are still in the willing seller willing buyer policy) will result in social unrest. Land will be taken from them forcefully later in future if they don't sell it to government now, and also provide skills to black farmers. Some of the farms that have been sold to blacks have stopped being productive, that's because of the skills issue which the ANC and farmers must resolve.
the gov owns a lot of land, why the obsession with so called white land?
Just a guess, because it's been developed and is worth something?

Who is entitled to what land?
THE HISTORY OF LAND-ownership in South Africa once came before the International Court of Justice. From 1960 to 1966, Ethiopia and Liberia had fought a fierce legal campaign against South Africa in the World Court at The Hague, to put South West Africa under the guardianship of the United Nations. They alleged that “South Africa was already effectively occupied by non-whites before Europeans began to settle in the country and the Europeans proceeded to take occupation of non-white land.” By using the works of well-known historians, doctoral theses and archives, the South African legal team refuted these allegations effectively and Ethiopia and Liberia eventually accepted South Africa’s version of the history of landownership. South Africa, referring to the occupation by black tribes up until 1652 maintained that: “Although no exact calculation is possible, it would appear that all the areas inhabited by the Bantu tribes comprised approximately one-eighth of the total area of South Africa including the protectorates.”
Very interesting....
But of course it was the racist colonialist lawyers who came up with those figures.
