Article: Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

i think the reason some people are 'ad-blocking' on myBB, is that myBB is suppose to be a site to fight agaist monopolies of companies like Telkom, or bad service of companies like Sentech, IBurst etc. but these days the site is full of add's from them :wtf:

myBB is at a difficult stage, you can't be the fore runner for consumer liberalisation, and paste the ads of "these" companies all over the site

conflict of interest's much?

just my 2c ;)

I don't block anything on mybb on purpose (yet), as the ads hasn't bothered me much. But some might be blocked because of general rules setup on addblocker.

Ooops, I just realized that I don't have adblock plus installed on this computer  Thanks for reminding me. :D

... but I turn the adblock plus off for those sites where I spend most of my time. I don't mind supporting them with ad revenue.

But for all the rest which I may only once or occasionally visit... it's goodbye ads... I don't owe them anything! :p

Fighting against them? What do you mean? MYBB is a place you come and enjoy yourself, be it a good chat, fight or bitching about service delivery. This is not some site fighting the good fight. There is so much to mybb that some people don't seem to see.

Blocking ads on this site is just terrible, you barely even notice the ads.

As long as the ads remain small and not "in our faces" as they currently are I'm sure that it will be no problem. As soon as a sniff of a popup appears the blockers will be on full time.

so according to you, myBB has/and never will 'fight' for the consumer, so its just a 'hangout' forum

True. The ads on this site are less invasive than most. But that's why ads get blocked in the first place: if they are too busy singing and dancing and getting in the way of the content of the site, you adblock them.

You need a system that records when an ad *should* be displayed but isn't. This is actually a good indication that the ad is not working. You could even provide this information to the advertisers to help them develop better adverts ... that is, if you could look yourself in the face afterwards.

I'm quite a fan of AdBlock I'll admit, but there are sites which I choose to support and I disable ad block on the site, and it's easy enough for anyone to do if they have AdBlock plus installed. I think banner advertising is crude and outdated, web marketing needs a shakeup or atleast they need to get smarter about the way they display their information so that it only appears when the Adblock is disabled. If your content is really that important and is not just a rehashed blog of another site then the visitors will disable their Adblockers and not just read the information on another site.

Interestingly enough, I'm not sure how Autotrader do it but you cannot see the individual car details with AdBlock on, whether this was on purpose or not it was quite an effective way to get users to disable their Adblocks.

I think that's fair.

As long as I am not on 3G - from now on ABP = off for MyBB.

It would be interesting to see how much space the adverts take up. Is there anyway to switch to the mobile version of the bb from a normal browser?

Wow i never knew the was a pay per view ad system, Adblock turned off for myBB and myG!

I had it unblocked for mybroadband.co.za, but only now saw that it was blocking again since the site upgrade. It is now disabled again for MyBB.
